Recent threads about grinding old files into knife blades motivated me to finish this project I started working on a few months ago. This is the first knife I've made, though I've had some other experience with similar stuff so this came together fairly neatly. I debated between posting it here or in off topics, because I tried to make it look kind of like a period knife, but only using materials I already had. So, its sort of a "if it looks period, that's only because it doesn't look modern" generic SCA knife. It has a nice weight, blade is about 1/4" thick at the forte and thins to about 1/8" at the tip. I'm curious to see how it holds up, since the only sort of "heat treating" I did was to not let it get to hot to turn colors while grinding, and only letting it air cool rather than quenching.

It's a very nice piece, which any number of people would proudly wear on their belt.

(Under high magnification I can J-U-S-T make out that there was lettering on the pommel disk. Probably wouldn't have noticed except that you'd alerted me that is was a coin.)

You did back off the temper from that of a file, right? Too pretty to let it break cause it was still "file hard"!

I had been thinking that since the blade survived being made in my shop (which included getting bumped around a lot as I worked on other stuff) that the blade had passed a durability test of sorts, so I was not worried about it...

But after playing around with the knife for a few days, thinking about how if the blade broke it would be a pain in the ass to refit the hilt/handle to a new blade; and that if I tap the blade with my finger, the blade sounds like hard tempered glass - now I do plan on taking it apart and seeing what kind of retempering I can do on the blade... but I wonlt have time or tools for it until after Pennsic.

Now I am gonna have to make one....
