Embroidery help - float stitch?

I've been going through a Central Asian embroidery phase lately and I'd like to take a stab (pardon the pun  ) at recreating this embroidery http://www.metmuseum.org/toah/works-of-art/1988.296 once I finish my current projects. According to the article I found that goes with this piece http://www.metmuseum.org/publications/bulletins/1/pdf/3258794.pdf.bannered.pdf, it was done in chain stitch, laid work, and float stitch. I know how to do the first two, but float stitch I don't have a clue about. I can't find it in my needlework books, and googling it brings up knitting or machine embroidery instructions. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

The only thing I'm seeing off-hand that seems consistent with the pictures is "Longer-than-normal satin stitches that lay on top of a design...".

Thanks, that sounds about like how the picture looks. In looking at it I'd have assumed it was just satin stitch.
