23rd Annual Arts & Arms Making Workshop
2 ½–day Classes
Session One
Mon. & Tues., October 8 & 9
8 a.m.–5 p.m.
Wed., October 10, 8 a.m.–12 p.m.
Traditional Barrel Making
Students will work with Blacksmith Nathan Allen to discover the process of forging and finishing a skelp-welded gun barrel. Through a combination of demonstrations and hands-on work, the class will walk through the steps of welding a barrel, making reaming and rifling tools, and finishing the inside and outside of the barrel. $285/$275 member
Quill Working
Quill Worker James Blake will pass on the art and traditions of Eastern Woodland Indian quill work. Using authentic brain-tanned hide, students will learn to develop traditional patterns, process and dye quills, and apply quills to a project of their own such as a knife sheath, neck pouch or shoulder bag. $300/$290 (tools required)
Leather Work
Join Folk Artist Ken Scott as he teaches his unique style of making hunting bags and pouches. Pattern development and basic leather working techniques will be covered as well as Ken's unique antiquing methods. $300/$290 member (tools required)

New! Finger Weaving
Native Artist James Blake will share tips for Eastern Woodland finger weaving. From material selection to design to execution of the weaving, James will pass on the techniques of this art form suitable for use on sashes, pouches and bags. $300/$290 member
Knifesmithing
Under the tutelage of Knifesmith Dwight Gallian, students will learn about the history and manufacture of a traditional hand-forged knife. Class will include materials selection, forging and finishing a functional knife. $280/$270 member (tools required)
Folding Knife
Blacksmith Nathan Allen will instruct students how to build an 18th-century style folding knife. Traditional filing, bench work and heat treating skills will be used to construct an attractive steel and brass folding knife. $295/$285 member (folding knife)
Evening Class
Tues., October 9, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Decorative Technique for Redware Pottery
Learn how to lay a design, glaze and carve on Pennsylvania German and early New England redware. Take home an heirloom piece of pottery to cherish for a lifetime. $75/$70 member

Tinsmithing
Tinsmith Mike Runyan introduces the art of working sheet tin into functional objects. Students will have a choice of completing multiple projects based on historic examples such as mugs, camp kettles, tinder boxes, and candle sconces. Tools and techniques of the tinsmith will be covered including layout, cutting, soldering and the use of stakes and other forming tools. $265/$255 member
Inkle Weaving
Weaver Sue Payne will lead the class in inkle weaving. Through the completion of several powder horn or hunting bag straps, participants will learn about material selection, loom design, warping the loom and weaving to create beautiful works of art. This class is suitable for all those wanting to learn basic skills or to develop more advanced skills. $260/$250 member
Carving
Learn basic carving techniques under the tutelage of Master Engraver John Schippers, author of the recently published Engraving Historic Firearms. Using simple carving knives, students will learn proper design and layout of long rifle relief carving. Original examples of period long rifles and pistols will be on display for students to reference in their work. $245/$235 member (tools required)
Basic Blacksmithing
Join Blacksmith Nathan Allen to learn the basics of blacksmithing, including how to use a forge, draw, punch, harden and temper steel, and do forge welding. Projects such as s-hooks, fireplace pokers, chain links and a fork will be made. $260/$250 member
Pennsylvania German Design
Sunday only, October 7, 8 a.m-5 p.m.
Learn the technique and artistry of traditional Pennsylvania German fraktur and calligraphy with Folk Artist Ken Scott. In addition to learning the techniques of drawing and water colors, students will discover the history and design of this art form. $125/$120 member (tools/materials required)

Hornworking; Southern Banded Horn
Further develop your hornworking skills through the construction of a southern banded horn. Hornsmith Art Decamp will discuss the history and architectural syles of powder horns. Learn lathe techniques for turning in both horn and wood. Other techniques covered will include proper horn selection, scraping, heating, and shaping and coloring of horn. $580/$560 member (tools required)
Engraving
Master Engraver John Schippers, and author of the recently published Engraving Historic Firearms, teaches the art of metal engraving. Using practice pieces, students will learn basic design, tool selection and sharpening techniques. $525/$505 member (tools required)
