Jousting toys

Post by Mac »

Does anyone have links to other pictures of these jousting toys in Vienna?

I am thinking about the possibility of producing them, and need more views and angles.

Thanks!

I wish I had a little tot or three who would enjoy that. Jeez, I should be careful what I wish for...both of my daughters are of bearing age. Feel like a shadow just fell over my grave! ;)

No photos, sorry.

But if you do make them, put me down for a pair. I always regret not getting one of your pewter canteen/flask/costrels when they were available. I don't want to miss these as well.

Perhaps you should offer them with the optional pinwheel?

FWIW - here's an illustration of a sickly three-year-old with his toy knights in the Schwartz Trachtenbuch. Not wheeled, but possibly metal (and possibly more everydayish).

A bit less jousting-sturdy, but it's a French toy knight at the Musee du Moyen Age (Cl.17751), c. 1360-1370.

When I follow this link, I don't get a postcard with the knight. Can you help me figure out what I am doing wrong?

Thanks!

This image features in my idea about how to play with these. Note how there are weights on the strings passing over the edges of the table.

I'm not so sure about this guy.... He's sort of minimalist.

When my boys were little, we made a bunch of the ceramic knights and finger puppets out of sculpy clay, they looked just like the fired ones..

looking at the original picture posted the base, horse, wheels, knight, and reins are all separate pieces, cast and then riveted (for lack of a better word). the legs of the nights have "nails" and the reins do too, also there is a definite line below the hooves.

I also see 2 loops for stings below the base. could it have been set on a board with a tilting rail in the middle and a guide string so they were given a push and ran down the string with one (hopefully) falling over in the tilt? I like the hole in the rear for real horsehair tails too

Hi Mac,

I know you have seen this reference, because we spoke about it at Pennsic. However, they are pictured in the following book:

Kunsthistorisches Museum, Wien Waffensammlung

Katalog Der Leibrustkammer
I. Teil
Der Zeitraum Von 500 bis 1530

Verlag Anton Schroll & Co. Wein

Plate 84. My copy was printed 1976. The text may offer additional insight if translated.
