For a variety of reasons, I've decided to try stitching leather soles to one of my pairs of chausses. Anybody got past experiences to share? I don't have a ton of leather working experience. I'm using some leftover deer leather from FnI period mocs.

Just FYI, if these soles are going to be walked on. Ie, used as shoe soles. Chances are that the deer leather will wear out VERY quickly. Deer leather is very supple and soft and will wear out fast.

Leather for soles is generally cowhide, and quite thick, about a quarter inch. It's usually been compressed in the tanning process to make it denser and more durable. This tends to make sewing the stuff more than a little tough.

I have worn deerskin, and elkskin moccs with minor problems. Other than feeling every bump in the road, the leather actually didnt wear out as fast as you would think they would.
