I made these items for Murdock and delievered them at GW. He was pleased but more importantly his lady was happy!
Thought I would post some pics so all could enjoy them.
He wanted the HE hinges and handles on them and man they look nice, had a few scary moments bending over the staple ends since the clothing trunks are cedar and I was afraid they would split with the pressure. I was wrong but came close a few times.

Good Sir Vitus if you wish my craftsman to make you such items, you have but to send me a message and details can be worked out. Oddly enough my lady asked much the same question as yours. :D

nice work, does the table top fold down or is it one piece?

Do you have evidence for the lathes on the outside of the boxes like that? I havn't seen any like that before, can you point in the direction of examples?

Table top is one piece works great

as soon as i get all the candel wax off of it it's becoming our kitchen table

:P

Only problem i encountered was the back of the HE fur de leis (sp?) hinge on the big trunk was just not nong enough to take the weight of the HUGE top. It bent, I've taken it of ane it bent back with just a couple whacks from the beadblow mallet.

Gonna get some beefier black screws, or perhaps rivit the hinges on.

Nothing wrong with the hinges, the trunk top is as big as the table top, it's quite heavy. I'd heartly recomend the HE hardware. I'd suggest using the fishtail style on anything large and heavy, like armour boxes. The pretty ones have a shorter backstrap.

I'll also be adding in some stops to keep the tops from opening too far. Maybe leather or a small chain.

Kate didn't want me to get em originally, now she wanst another one. She also loves out new coffee table..... the gigantic armour/camp box. I'm also kicking around another "small" box.

And guys the small box size held all my armour for the war and 2 extra helmets and 2 bucklers. The big box, we got the tent, the walls, the dining fly and the floor in it along with a case and a half of water!!
It's HUGE. It weighed a ton too. Had to run my spear through the rings and carry it like the ark of the covenant. :P

Now comes the fight over what color to stain em. She wants em the dark red brown of our other stuff i want tongue oil. Sooooo we'll see. Probably come down to how much the cost difference is.

Lovein' em

Why does Murdock get all the good stuff...I mean other that the fact that he buys it or makes it...?

Yup, that's what they're intended for. We copied them from a huge painted "armour chest" in the Burrell collection in Glasgow. I imagine some guy's poor valets were schleping his armour around the same way 600 years ago.

Nice to hear they're being put to the use they were designed for.

Nice work!

How is the table top attached to the table? I made a completely different table based on a woodcut, but I've just set the top on the legs. I'd like a better solution.

Only evidence I have of exterior lathes is from a woodcut of a wagon, not on a chest. I wanted some way to strengthen the corners as the planks are butt joined (since I cant find 16 inch wide lumber that wont cost someones first born child) and this is the best way I know of.

Ron the table top is just set on top, I have exterior lathes to give the right spacing and the fit is so tight I had to relieve the outer edges about a 1/16th to get the fit I wanted.

Gwen after I had a moment of panic looking at the handles I sent ya'll an email asking advice, and the response was clear an quick. Thanks. I really like those handles!

Thanks for the compliments guys. And remember, you can make my campsite look better as I make yours look better. :D

Have you considered Doweling the Butt joint? I picked up a dowelling jig off e-bay and used it to fix a chair that has split in several places. I can't imagine its gonna go anywhere as tough as it is. I have NO idea how period it is.

Lachlann,

Nice work. Looks good. Wish I could have seen them in person.

So how did you make the legs for the table? Looks like a pair of 2X12's with a doweled lap joint. Is that right?

I have a doweling jig just dont like to use it with only a hand drill. Its possible of course just very difficult so I lathed and doweled the corners of the chests.

Brandr you have a good eye, the legs are 2x12s with about a 2 inch lap joint, and 1/2 dowels.

Man, I've gotta go out to the shop and start working. So much lumber, so many patterns, so little time...

"Nice work. Looks good. Wish I could have seen them in person."

Yall all could have

The whole camp walks by my encampment. St Micheals, i'm in the corner next to the cabin, last tent before St Mikes becomes Darkwood.

The HUGE one with the giant dining fly with all the cool camp gear.

Not like i'm easy to miss. Look for shiny stuff and periodnazi toys, or as i have been dubbed by my campmates.

"Truncheon weilding fashin nazi!!!"

Everyone in camp that could get a set of shoes in their size from Brian now has at least one par of Revival shoes. So thats like 8 pair of combat boots on the shelf. Sir Stuart even bought the thigh high "Murdoch boots" as he called em. Only James (who wears a 13 quad E) did'nt get any. He tried there were just none big enough.

I also sent i dunno how many people to Mandrake, i think they ended up at least a dozen garments between em.
A couple bought whole outfits. Most just Bockstien tunics or hosen.

BwahahahahahahHAAHAHAHahahahahAHAHAHAHAhhahahahahAHAHAHAHH!!!!!

"everyone wants to be like Mike" ooorrrr

"Can you sssSSMMMMMEEEEELLLLLLLlllllllllll what Murrrrdock is cookin!!!!!!!"

Gwen,

Could you send me pics of the painted armor chest? I would love to see the colors and design.
