Hey all, I have decided I am going to produce an black w/ gold trim early 15th century harness. I would like to know of some easy techniques I can use to produce a solid, dark finish for both chainmaille and steel. I fight SCA heavies and need a finish that will maintain durability through heavy stress. Ive also came to terms with the fact that it will probably require maintainince. Thanks all.

Typically I first blue a product with chemical blueing and let it set for 24 hrs in a coating of oil. That is then wiped clean and the metal is the heated until it begins changing color slightly at which time it is then either soaked in an oil bath (if small) or sprayed down with oil (for larger pieces)
After this wax or oil to keep it maintained. This will give you an even dark finish.
