14th cent sword suspension

Hi all,
I need to know how to suspend a swrod scabbard in the style of the 14th cent. I will be wearing a plaque belt, but I do not want to wear a smaller belt for the sword. (I will be wearing a smaller belt right below the BP but it's too high for a sword.
So how do I do it? I will (most likeley) be wearing a lentner or angel wing houplande so I was thinking about just cutting slits in it similar to the one worn by Charles VI which has a slit for the sword scabbard. is there any other way to do it? I have also heard of "hooks" in the plaque belt which holds the scabbard.
and one last question, if I were to do the idea with the slits in the clothing, would it be accurate to do that for the maille shirt as well?
Thank you,
Aaron
