Has anyone ever tried making and/or using something like this?

It is very similar to that found in the fechtbuch "Gladitoria".

The image is a late 15th c St. George, from http://www.fioredeiliberi.org/gallery2/ ... temId=6960.

What you've shown is a relatively typical bouched (notched) "ecranche" tilting shield, offering a rather static defense of the left side of the body when jousting. That the St George has a lance in the frame should be a pretty good clue to what the shield's for. It's not the type of shield that would be used as a buckler.

Check out some of the other paintings of St George on that gallery you found, and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Back in the mid 90's, Duke Cyrred of Ashwood and a few other fighters were playing around with them at fighter practices in the Outlands. I dont know if they are using them out there anymore.

Duke Gaston of Trimaris fought with one for years very successfully.
