Theoretical viking fighter broad kit

Post by Ingvarr »

My daughter's persona is non-specific time period Irish, not quite genericelt. It's about time to start working on her hardsuit kit. She told me last night that she wanted to do "Viking" which basically means "I want a spangen helm." Several of the helmets she liked were actually more Migration than Viking for what it's worth. I was thinking that it might be cool, given the mores on cross dressing, to put together a semi-plausible kit for a migration to viking age woman's fighting kit. My biggest concern is that my little girl doesn't break. Her biggest concerns are that she look cool, and that she doesn't get hit in the boobs so much that she gets breast cancer. I told her that the last wasn't really how it worked. She said, "I know, but still."

Hidden female street hockey armour or lamellar for the body would be the way to go.

Hidden street hockey pants give a lot of bruise minimizing coverage for the legs and buttocks, whereas hidden SCA-armour-type legs leave the butt and sometimes the hips exposed.

Maybe some low-profile leather bazubands for the arms.

I'd get one of Otto's small spangens available through Stonekeep.

Not 100% authentic, but it's a good place to start.

I appreciate the thoughts, the street hockey armor is a good idea if it is large enough, she's fairly chesty. I'll have to look into it.

I was more thinking about general appearance though. Assuming she goes more Migration Era, how should she look? She might well poopoo the whole idea and want to go with pants and a tunic, but does anyone have more girly suggestions that don't involve hangerocs? She most definitely doesn't like the apron dress look.

Some of the reconstructions of the Merovingian women's stuff feature knee-length dresses, those those reconstructions sound like no sure bet. Most famous from Queen Arnegunde's grave. Some others. See

Even if it is dubious, it looks nice and would be more practical than long skirts, and you could throw on your caftan thing overtop and hardly look fighterish at all in a moment if you wanted to.

Thanks for that Cunian, that would look pretty cool and while dubious would be far from the most dubious kit on the field.
