new scabbard in progress

Post by Blackoak »

Ok, I have finally started to make a new scabbard for my live steel sword. This is a wood core (I used poplar) that I routed the blade shape out of each piece then glued them together. I used my belt sander to shape it.

Not the best picture I know. It is wrapped with 3-4 oz veg tanned leather and stained. A closer pic of the oak tooled on it.

I have the straps cut and just need to tool, dye, and attach them.

It is my plan to etch a copper throat piece for it. I know I will eventually get a chape for it, but I will attempt to do my own. We will see how that turns out.

Thanks for all the inspiration on the AA to get me off my ass.
More pics as I progress.

Ok, I have been doing some work on the belt.

Image

The hex pattern on the belt is from an ivory alter carving in Salerno cathedral museum. Seen in the Norman Knight Osprey book. The figure of a king ? has it as trim on his tunic.

I am doing the split belt rather than a buckle for this one. I still need to do all of my metal fittings.

Jon, I just did a simple saddle stitch running down the back of the scabbard.

Image

The belt is split and wraps to make the decorative tie in the front. Not sure if that ever had a practical purpose, but it does look cool.

Now to the metal bits.
