Breastplate Quandry - Aluminum or Steel?

Post by Gregoire de Lyon »

My hard kit is based in the last quarter of the 14th century, France. I wear a jupon over a breast plate, so it is never seen except when I am armoring up or down. All the same, it bothers me that my current protection is a plastic 7 piece Churburg. I want a solid globose of metal.

The question I am struggling with is whether or not to spend the extra cash and get a spring steel globose, or go the far cheaper route of an aluminum globose. Either way it will be covered by my jupon and possibly even a layer of decorative fabric riveted to the breast plate itself.

Pros? Cons? Opinions?

If you are going to cover the globose with fabric then I would go with aluminium. No one will see the metal so I see no reason to spend the extra money on spring.

If you ever plan on wearing the globose ontop of your jupon as a metal one, then I would go with spring. Aluminium LOOKS like aluminium.

(on Pennsic) I know that movie. It is the 13th warrior. A bunch of guys in armour that doesn't match itself or anybody elses, go on a trip and argue and get drunk and get laid and then fight Tuchux.

Why would it bother you less if the armour was aluminum than plastic?
