The Armour Archive

We are currently compiling a roster of jousters who may be interested in participating in our jousting tournaments. While every year there is a crop of new jousters, not all of them are known to us; in an effort to educate ourselves to who is out there, we are posting this general solicitation.

The events are organized and run by Historic Enterprises, i.e. Jeffrey Hedgecock, Gwen Nowrick and Luke Binks. We are the sole owners and producers of our events, and we establish and enforce our own standard for armour, kit and skill.

In an effort to present visually spectacular events, the 'theme' for our events are the mid-late 15th C. Europe. To participate in a Historic Enterprises tournament, you are required to have equipment and kit of a recognizable mid-late 15th C. appearance:

* Full plate armour (historically accurate, of a reasonably high quality)
* Appropriate ecranche (shield)
* Full caparison of period appropriate design (full cover)
* Crest of period appropriate design
* Clothing and accessories of appropriate design and colours (historically accurate, of a reasonably high quality)

I do not yet meet all of your criteria...

...but I will meet all of them soon enough. I want to be included. What you guys have been doing is exactly the direction I'd like to take my medieval re-enactment interests.

Do you have any target dates for events next year?

When I get my armour unpacked, I'll take some pictures, but I'm pretty sure I know what I need to change to meet your requirements.

For the caparison, are you requiring hoods or just a full body?

I'm pretty sure the post is clear that HE will be making that determination about whether or not someone meets those criteria. Ironically when asked by someone I know locally about this very subject one of the things I explained was why it is important to ensure that the people you are inviting to events are up to the criteria you set and that you don't just take their word for it because the exact meaning of what constitutes a lot of those things have a certain amount of varience. With the amount of money that goes into this event having someone come that your not positive about is a bad idea because you may end up having to get them on the same page as everyone else at the last minute and that can be a hassle.

I also told the person who asked me that they should expect to prove themself. While it would be nice if we lived in a world where everyone was everything they thought they were we don't and in reality we have to prove ourselves and such a thing as this isn't any different. While I have no doubt they are willing to talk and give advice and what not to people who are interested the show must go on and that is much easier with those who have already proven themselves. It isn't just a we like you or don't like you thing, being liked probably helps but you can be a friend and have everything you need and just not be up to it and the reality is your not up to it. There are always other things that need to be done at such events and sometimes that is one of the best ways to prove yourself and your commitment.

When resources are limited how people involved get along becomes important. From what I've read and heard the current group of jousters get along very well and when the choice becomes between someone who everyone gets along with and someone people don't get along with the choice is easy. You also have another mark against you because you live on a different continent. Longer the distance typically the more the travel costs which means the more important the size of the travel stipend is.

All that being said it never hurts to try but airing complaints about who does or doesn't like you in public might. Polite dialoge rarely hurts anyone and assuming there are no legal impediments I think most everyone is welcome to buy a ticket and watch from the stands.

BTW incase anyone doesn't know I'm in no way affiliated with HE. I just have lots of opinions on things.

I have only 2 things to add to Brent's very good observations:

First is that we run an international tournament, so being on another continent isn't an issue. We're prepared to invite anyone from anywhere, provided they meet the standards.

Second, anyone is welcome to bait me in a public forum, but I won't engage. I learned a long time ago to settle my disputes with people in private, not in public. I'm easy to find, my email is gwen @ historicenterprises.com.

This has nothing to do with baiting you Gwen. It has all to do with the crap you spew.

Our falling out two years ago comes down to you telling me that you and Jeff think rolling the left shoulder back in the joust and denying your opponent a target is a legitimate tactic. I call that cheating, as would pretty much any other jouster out there.

I keep seeing all these posts from you extolling the virtues of honourable sport engaged by gentlemen etc etc.

Have you now changed your mind? Do you now say that rolling the left shoulder back is cheating? Was I in fact correct??

If yes, then we have absolutely no issues and I wish you the best of luck with your events and onwards and upwards.

Some guys from our team in the netherlands are interested to participate in this tournament. We do 1465's tournaments on a professional basis, mostly small shows with just two riders, about 50-60 times a year. The current jousters have been trained in medieval riding and fighting on horseback by Joram van Essen. Two new riders are being trained by me.
Interested at the moment are:
Wouter Nicolai: I have been jousting for 3 years, and have the equipment described above.
Matthijs Witsenburg: jousting for about 2 years. All equipment except a frogmouth which is made right now.
Bertus Brokamp: has started jousting this year in a borrowed armour, he is currently making his own equipment. Bertus in definitely interested, but want to finish his equipment first, so maybe not this year.
