Period furniture (or a living fossil from India)

For those interested, the Washington Post today has a cover page story about India. The main photo shows a couple in India, in their home.
In the background, the man is reclining on a bed/couch that is remarkably like some period beds I have seen, and makes you wonder about where the model originated.

Here is the pic

Image

it shows a partially turned bed post, with sections cut and turned, with a mortise and tenon joint and what appears to be a spiral wrapped cloth tape on the header, suggesting a strap-based suspension for a thin mattress.

The actual paper has a better pic but I cannot copy it.

Just thought it was cool to share for the furniture buffs out there....

You think that looks familiar?

Check out the Found Mini Stool at Pottery Barn.

(And if you can't remember where you've seen it before, visit http://larsdatter.com/benches.htm for starters ...)

Actually I'd bet that the originals started out more level than the Pottery barn ones that look more like the museum ones after centuries of use.
