Post by Woodstock »

For those that fight with a mace what historical model did you base your weapon off?

Bonus points for pics...

This isn't 14th century, but believed to be 13th century, which is close enough for me. The original is only the iron head, but the dimensions are very close to the rubber kong ball (8.7cm or 3.5"). I don't know if butt-caps are period, but it helps prevent the mace from sliding out of my grip.

Original mace head was found near Ely, Cambridgeshire, England.

Did you force the rattan in the hole, or enlarge the hole first (and how)?

my understanding of how kong maces are generally made:

1. dremel out the fiddly bits so you have a constant-diameter hole running through the center of the kong toy. Should be <1.25" in diameter.

2. bevel the head of a piece of rattan to a very short taper.

3. apply WD40 or other evaporating lubricant liberally to rattan and inside of toy.

4. force together, wait for lube to evaporate. This should be a sufficient press-fit by itself, but:

4a. tape/robe above and below the mace head. to add extra security, if desired.

4b. use spray-on tooldip to change kong toy color, if desired.

I used a dremel with fiber cut-off to open the hole to nearly the diameter of the rattan. It's about 1/8" in diameter shy of the rattan. Since the tip of the rattan should be rouned over, and add using wd-40 makes it pretty easy.
Plant the butt of the rattan on the floor center the head on the rounded end of the rattan and put your body weight into a squat press, and it will go right on.

I'm not a sir. (There is a Sir Cian Conar McQuaid out of the Ponte Alto/Sudentorre area near by that people always confuse me with). The butt-cap is a decorative fencing/door rosette from King Architectural Metals (iron works co) in Bright Hills (Baltimore, MD). They sell similar ones in iron, aluminum and obviously brass.

Thanks, and my apologies for the mixup. I WAS thinking of the "other" (Sir) Cian, whom I've met.
