I would have noted to the marshall that I didn't agree with his ruling, but would adhere to it.

I would then ask if I could head back to a rez point, or barring a rez battle a convenient behind the lines spot, where I could then search for a "new" spear, and summarily use the one already in my hand.

I would take any amount of time to search as he felt I needed, so long as the "new" spear ended up looking suspiciously like the "old" spear.

Does that seem like a good compromise? It especially is relevant if the spearman has no other spear to use.

I'll have to see if I can dig up the articles but the last time indestructable shields came up I went looking for the kind of of wood used in late medieval shields and all but if I recall correctly 4 out of the 5 were poplar about a 1/2" thick.

It's important to remember that the wood is just the inner layer. What went over that was canvas and gesso, often several layers, and/or leather (which was often rawhide). The skin added a lot of structural strength.

No his spear or would be considered broken and would have to be reserected by the user stepping back for x anount of time... they themselves are not dead; they can pull another weapon or drop their shield down to thier side and contunue to fight if they didn't want to leave the line.

Just a thought.

That would put great swords, bills and poleaxes back in their place as spear and shield wall breakers.

Oh yeah....this would be fun!

Let me get this straight: You would call the Spearman Dead if someone hit his spear three times in a row? If i hit a Shield Five times the Bearer is Dead?

Realize that this is basically what you are saying.

The marshal was loony toons.

sounds like he needed to go back to marshals school.

There was no obvious safety issue so he should have kept is mouth shut until there was any kind of safety problem that required a hold to be called.
