Rapier day at the Higgins 8/15
Posted: Wed Jul 29, 2009 12:16 pm
On Saturday, August 15th, we will be having demos and introductory workshops at the Higgins Armory Museum to promote our new Academy of the Sword program. This is an ongoing salle d'armes that provides a progressive system of instruction in classical and historical swordsmanship, based upon living tradition, the latest academic research, and practical experimentation.
As it stands now, I will definitely be teaching an introductory class focusing on the theory and mechanics of 17th century Italian rapier with an emphasis on the history and mentality of the weapon. If there is sufficient interest, I can see if we can add a more advanced rapier class; a class (or lecture) comparing and contrasting modern, classical, and historical forms; and/or a spadone class (late Italian longsword).
There will be a nominal charge of $10 for the class if you take it (only the class - the demos are free with admission), which goes to support the Museum. To sign up, contact Rhonda Houle at (508) 853-6015, ext 20, or higgins@... for more information. Bring equipment if you have it; we also have a closet full of loaner gear. Also see our Web page at http://www.higgins.org/Calendar/acadsword.shtml. This event is
open to swordspersons 14 and up (10 with a participating parent).
