Samuel, I agree with your point.

I simply do not want to limit the possibility of having fun. Two swords ad to the fun, it's rock 'n roll all the time. According to some sagas it has happened and it is highly likely that some one took up a second sword in the heat of battle.

Speardueling is allso mighty fun but is it historicaly correct? Probably not. Do I want to keep it? Oh, yes.

Unfortunately, it communicates all too well, since it's almost always wrong.... "studded leather" is a fun, laughable example...

Ooo Ooo I vote for the studded leather because in D&D they always hit a stud and it helped were as in my COP I get smacked between the plates sometimes and it hurts like I'm naked.

Im fine with the fun factor..

personally I play two-sword, spear vs spear ( especially at the barrier), spear and sword, great sword and single ( aka Christian w the great sword held at the ricasso) none of which I claim could even be close to what id have done as a period Knight.

and thats where I keep it...


I just dont want wasted efforts to go toward convincing others some form of combat thats effective in a one-shot-one-kill game would be common in period. sort of like Idevals challenge on madu... If you find ducumentation thats plausibly period thats fine but dont try and justify a style becuase its effective under our very non-period rule system....

Think of it like this, how many times have you been hit with a shot and fell to the ground? now in period there is a damn good chance with nice period armor you'd take quite a few shots before falling and even then you'd be taking many more while down until your fellow Knights could get over to you and beat off everyone and stand you again before a dagger got through your visor:-)

If by spear dueling you mean two combatants going at each other with just spears its very historically correct. The challenges at Vannes, one of the most famous combat accounts from Froissart are almost all with spears.

Okay, many don't like two sword. What about other weapons combinations? Sword and axe or hammer? I have a friend who is getting two Keystone Creations hammer heads to play florentine hammers.

I've been playing with short spear (5") and shield, which I've seen pictured for norseman, as well as others. Last night, I dropped the shield for a bit and played sword and spear. It was a blast, and I did very well with it. (a fluke, I'm pretty sure)

I understand that I don't express myself clear all the time (if at all... ).
I was mainly thinking of the kind of combat that more or less frequently take place when two SCA-armies meet at a narrow place (bridge, gate etc.).Spers out front with the rest of the people waiting behind.

William - I have only actuallly seen this tried once and the formation was destroyed. Here we have the sheilds up front with polearms behind to protect from archery etc.
