The Midwest Historical Fencers Project and Gibson's Martial Arts is hosting a two day Western martial arts seminar on October 13th and 14th. The seminar is being held in Tulsa, OK at Gibson's Martial Arts.

Classes will be presented on the below topics.

Basic Rapier
Marozzo Counter Dagger
Pedagogy of George Silver

Hungarian Sabre
Bare Knuckle Boxing

Pallas Armata Rapier
The Medical Reality of Historical Wounds

The prices are $10 for one day, and $15 for both days. Classes begin at 9:00 AM both mornings, and the afternoon will be open floor.

Gibson's Martial Arts is located at 5455 S. Mingo Rd. in Tulsa, OK. I received an email concerning this weekend also being the same weekend as WMA 2001 in New York. We're looking at trying to run something low cost for the people in this area who cannot make it to New York for economic reasons. I was hoping to hold the seminar on the weekend of the 20th and 21st, but I have military obligations that weekend. The weekend of the 13th and 14th was the next best weekend for everyone involved. Most of our target audience already knows about both seminars, and I was posting to see what response we get.

We are not trying to detract from the larger event in New York. As this area is very geographically isolated in the Western Martial Arts community, we are attempting to get something moving using local talent. Anyone who has the ability to attend WMA 2001 in New York would be a fool not to. The quality of instruction available at that event is incredible and should be taken advantage of by anyone able to attend.

I'm not quite sure why I didn't know about your project before (since I'm just down the road in Edmond). I'll see what I can do about scaring up a few people from this area (and DFW) as well. I'd hate to miss this.

Here is the basic recommended gear list for the seminar.

Equipment for Rapier Combat:
1. Three Weapon Mask (Minimum)
2. Leather or Steel Gorget
3. Gloves
4. Athletic Cup (Men)
5. Breast Protector (Women)
6. Three Weapon Jacket or Equivalent (Recommended)
7. Long Pants and Closed Toe Shoes (Strongly Recommended)

Approved Practice Rapiers and Daggers:
1. Del Tin Practice Rapiers
2. Scottie Heavy Ren Blades
3. Scottie Diamond Schlagers
4. Standard Schlager Blades
5. Flexi-Dagger and Cut Down Epees
(Steel Tips Rolled and Blunted, and Covered with Rabbit Blunt)

Equipment for Waster Fighting:
1. Three Weapon Mask (Minimum) or Steel Helmet
2. Leather or Steel Gorget
3. Gloves and Forearm Protection
(Hockey Gloves or Steel Gauntlets Strongly Recommended)
4. Athletic Cup (Men)
5. Breast Protector (Women)
6. Arming Coat (Recommended)
7. Long Pants and Closed Toe Shoes (Strongly Recommended)
8. Knee Pads
9. Elbow Pads (If not Using Arming Coat)
10. If wasters are not available, hard wood dowels of at least 1 inch in diameter may be substituted in appropriate lengths. Edges and tips should be rounded.

Equipment for Padded Weapons Fighting:
1. Three Weapon Mask (Minimum)
2. Leather or Steel Gorget
3. Gloves (Recommended)
4. Athletic Cup (Men)
5. Breast Protector (Women)
6. Padded Weapons will conform to Standards Set by the Historic Armed Combat Association www.thehaca.com

Russ Mitchell, the instructor for the Hungarian Sabre class recommends a sabre waster, bokken, or curved stick for his class at the seminar. We will have a few on hand to loan out.

I would absolutely be thrilled to death to go to this thing, but I'm afraid I haven't any of the minimum equipment....

The equipment list is more directed for bouting. We will have some gear available to be used but it will have to be shared. We will also have longsword and cut & thrust wasters for sale from purpleheart armory www.woodenswords.com . If you do decide to attend at least get some light work gloves, an athletic cup, the rest we can try to help with. I want to thank the instructors and participants from this weekend's seminar.

On Saturday we began with me teaching an introductory longsword class. Brandon Bennett, from Gibson's Martial Arts, taught counter dagger techniques and bare-knuckle boxing throws ca. Broughton rules era. Russ Mitchell was kind enough to offer a demonstration of Hungarian Sabre methods, and this class was very enlightening. Scott Crawford, of the Bramble's School of Defense, gave a multimedia and hands-on presentation on The Pedagogy of George Silver that has changed many of my perceptions about Silver. We opened the floor to bouting and more personal instruction, and later retired to the White Lion Pub for dinner and suds.

On Sunday, Dr. Richard Swinney from the Bramble School of Defense gave a power point lecture on The Medical Reality of Historical Wounds. Dr. Swinney is an Army trauma surgeon who has treated multiple knife and one sword injury, giving him an excellent understanding of penetration and cut wounds. Dr. Swinney was followed by a repeat of the longsword class and my Rapier Basics class. For a change of pace, Darian Whittaker the owner of Gibson's, taught an intro to Cornish Wrestling. The spectator got more entertainment than they bargained for watching our clumsy attempts at wrestling. Andy Borman, an excellently skilled SCA rapier fencer, gave a class on the Pallas Armata's rapier chapters. By popular demand Scott did a second presentation of his George Silver class. We again ended the day with open floor bouting.

The seminar, while a little lighter in attendance than anticipated, was an unqualified success. We are looking forward to getting together again for the Bob Charon Seminar in February.

I would also like to thank my lovely wife Sheri who helped with not only the organization, but with my longsword class and Russ' Sabre demonstration.
