Japanese Blocking/parring thingie

Post by Hanso »

Has anyone made a gunsen (sp) and used it in combat? I am talking about the butterfly shaped solid war fan. I guess it was used as a signal device and there is more than one instant that has a fellow using it in combat. Now I know some people will say that it will be ineffective and all that. Not my worry to much, rather i was woundering construction thoughts and what not. I am thinking of cutting one out of some T-6 and then doing the edges like a normal shield and rivet it to some sort of handel. Maybe a piece of broken/broomed rattan. Lord knows I have a ton of that lyin around.

My former Squire Brother Kuji ka Onimusashi has a rattan, padding & duct tape gunsen he uses as a mace or an off hand parrying device/two weapon tool. He is very good with it.

hmm.. i dont recall talk of the war fan in the five spheres (5 rings) though the war fan is common in japan and china both as an offensive and defensive tool. Personaly i prefer the tessen. (the folding iron fan) a friend of mine clued me in that one can be easily made. make a round shield, cut it in thirds. drill a hole then cut out a hand hold towards the point end along one side. edge and paint to your preferrance and you now have 3 war fans to fight "sword & shield" technique of use is similiar to using a buckler.
