For those of us who wish to talk about the many styles and facets of recreating Medieval armed combat.

Someone else looking much cooler than me:

Jesse, our founder (Novae Militiae) and the guy who's teaching us to ride. This man can ride, as can Glen Kyle, another of our crew, who is also the "good guy" jouster at the Georgia Rennaissance Faire.

How many of you "heros" really think you'd have the balls to stand there with 1500 lbs barreling down on you?

We went on a trail ride 2 weeks ago and my wifes horse decided he was gunna roll in a particularly sandy area. Forgetting he had a saddle and rider he laid down to roll. As my wife yipped and jumped off he realized his mistake, got up, and ran around in circles like an idiot. My wife lept in front of this charging, scared 1200 lb horse and yelled stop. Bud, her horse slammed on the brakes and skid to a stop. Then he just stood there looking like a beaten dog. I thought that was a pretty ballsy thing to do and pretty funny.

funny story, but it really doesnt relate to the topic, after all, it was momma that was yelling whoa Image

Nope,

You look cooler Steve. The guy in harness is in an obviously posed shot. You on the other hand look more natural, like a guy riding around his masters estates, or a brother on pilgrimage. I think you look a little more 'Medieval' for what it's worth.

kind of forgot one thing here. after having all ranks on both sides broken, I would ride away form yon single footman, and find a bunch of my buds on their horses, and come back and ride his silly ass down. after all, my job is to destroy the other armay, right? not fiddle around in single combat. We've all heard the cry "reform" or some such similar phrase, right?

I am rapidly getting to the point of wanting to lock a bunch of you in a room, poor honey on you and throw fire ants in. The only way out will be to swear to discuss topics without rancor or personal attacks. You all bring so many good things to the discussion, but much of it gets lost in the venom or apparently unhumorous sarcasm.

Love,

Richard.

I do apologize if any of my comments or opinions come off sarcastic or in any kind of an attacting manner. They are certainly not intended to be so. Especially where I have quoted another archiver.

LOL. Thank you for your concern Johnathan, but you are not among those who I am speaking of. I could tell you were kidding.

Bob's historical examples were good. Of course, if you fall into the "footman stands little chance" camp, then there's another way we can look at this... just who was this duGuesclin guy anyway, what kind of wheaties did he eat for breakfast, and damn, but can I get some?

(sure hope I'm remembering the right guy, can't remember if it was duGuesclin or Marshall)

He was a commoner, a bully, a very strong, mean individual who rose from the forests of Brittany to Constable of France by organizing a series of guerrilla campaigns against the English in the mid- to later part of the 14th C. He was important enough to be ransomed back to the French crown several times. Not your average man-at-arms.

Of course, it helps if the foot get to pick the ground. Isn't the song "Catalan Justice" based on a real event?

If the ground isnt conducive to fighting on Horseback the Rider always the option of getting off. The footman doesnt have this option.

I would take the horse, personally (but then, I have a LOT of experience on the back of a horse - started riding at about 8 years old, in Arizona.. with lots of open space to ride...)
