Man, I wish I could play this year. I'd love to be out there with *another* Effingham on the field.

Uh-oh, I better see a money-lender, post-haste.
Maybe two.
Or three.

Say goodbye to Florida. Looks like you'll be spending some quality time in Arizona while things get sorted.

I love this fight.
If you don't keep your head on a swivel, the first notice you get that there is enemy behind you is pole-hammer to the head.
If you think you can be hit too hard, this fight is not for you.
Units win. Individuals are captured. (Your renown may go up, but your pockets get lighter)

I must empathize with Effingham. Would love to be there, but will have to settle for making sure my squire has his stuff together for it!
You hear that Seamus?

Kind of off topic but kind of on; can some one post links or pics to the flags used by France and by England at that timeframe? I'd like to make a pair of plaques that you hang from your aventail so that others can see what side you're fighting with.

sir nigel wrote:Here are the rules for the Combat of the Thirty:
**************************************************
Combat of the Thirty
1.) No basket hilts--all swords will have cross hilts. (NB: One handed weapons are going to be of very little use since you may only thrust with them.)
2.) No un-padded poll arms--all pole weapons must have an appropriately-shaped head of significant mass.
3.) No pole weapon may exceed 6 feet, no spear may exceed 7 feet, no sword may exceed 50 inches.
4.) We are using an assumed-plate standard. Blows to the body and limbs have no effect.
5.) Thrusts to an open face (i.e., a bargrill), neck, armpit, inside of the elbow, back of the ass, or back of the thigh (unless someone is actually wearing closed cuisses) all "kill" (or render you unable to continue—same thing). If you are "killed" you are out of the entire combat.
6.) Heavy blows to the head *did* have an effect, so any blow with a two-handed weapon will count towards a "stun." If you are struck three times to the head in any single engagement you are counted as stunned and must yield. We're all gentlemen, so we can all use common sense and a sense of honor to be realistic about what "a single engagement" means. If you get hit twice and then fighting breaks off, that's it, you start counting over. If three different guys hit you in the head one after the other with no real break in the fighting then you're stunned.
7.) Anyone who gets beaten so hard he can't continue may choose to yield.
8.) Anyone who is completely unarmed must yield (note that even a dagger is enough to prevent this).
9.) Anyone who touches the ground with anything other than the soles of his feet must yield.
10.) Capturing Prisoners: If you "must yield" (see above) or choose to do so then anyone (from the other side) can lay his weapon upon you or lay their hand upon to let you know that you are captured (e.g., "you're my prisoner," "yield!," "I've captured you," etc.). If no one does this then you may continue to fight as though nothing had happened.
11.) The captor must walk his prisoner off the field. While he's doing so, the captor may, of course, be forced to fight. If he is killed himself then the prisoner goes free. During such fights the prisoner must stand quietly awaiting the outcome.
12.) Prisoner's must off to the side of the field. If the person who captures them is "killed" (not captured, *killed*), then they are released and may return to the fighting as though nothing had happened.
13.) Ransom: There will only be one ransom paid and it is after the combat is over. You do not return to the engagement if you pay your ransom. The only way to return to the combat is if your captor dies.
14.) Combat will last until all of one side are either captured, killed or have retired voluntarily. A 10-minute break will be called every 15 minutes. (No one may bring in a horse at the last minute!) Anyone may voluntarily leave the field for as long as he wishes to rest and/or rearm at any time.
15.) The winning side is the one in possession of the field at the end.
16.) There's no setup of any kind required for this combat, but each side is required to bring enough water for their own people.
************************************************
Weapons will be as follows: two-handed swords between 44-50", not a sword that you can only grip the pommel with your second hands index finger and thumb; pole weapons that are 6' and under, be it a hammer, mace or axe and must be a two-handed weapon that look likes a medieval weapon and spears under 7 feet; back-up weapons are limited to daggers and short swords only. Earl Nigel and Sir Johannes will have the final say on all weapons.
Earl Nigel MacFarlane KSCA
Here is my evidence in favor of allowing spears of up to about eight feet:

Also, my tapered rattan spears are that length, and I'd be very reluctant to shorten them

Cutting down a full length horseman's lance on campaign was done, yes. Sometimes. Mine are already shorter than that.
It's not like I don't have a pollaxe I can use instead.

Time draws nearer to Pennsic and the time for this deed of armes once again. Alas, it seems that we will likely have spots left on both the French and the English forces.
I now that Johannes and I have right at about 30 on each of our respective rosters but past history shows that we usually need about 7 or 8 more than 30 due to attrition rates. I know I have already lost two people in the last week. One to real life keeping him away from Pennsic and another one has switched to Johannes team in the last week.
Also, I have lost my name off of my own roster. I will be at Pennsic but unable to fight as I am awaiting knee surgery. I have asked Sir Manfred von Halstern as my second to take the on-the-field duties for me and he has graciously accepted.
Cheers,

Sure thing. I cut the 1.75" plates out with aviation shears, from a 20-gauge solid brass kickplate I picked up at Home Depot. Ground and deburred them with a grinding wheel. Used the decorative washers from Revival for the center and solid brass dome top rivers from RJ Leahy to mount the plates.
It took about a full day to peen all the rivets but I'm pretty satisfied with the overall end appearance.

Galleron's spears are fine by me as well. The rule on spear length has been in since the 1st CotT but I think we have let Galleron fight with the same spear several times. We have condoned the use of them on several occasions so I see no need to keep his spear off of the field.

It's not the weapons, it's the mindset of the people who take the field for this deed.
Those who have participated over the last 5 years could all bring left handed spoons with dinner plates and it would be a worthy deed. When this deed becomes polluted with minds not set to this task, or those who seek not the hardships of this deed and instead are undertaking it because "it's cool" and gives them points it will begin to lose its worth.
Basically, when the wusses decide to come play because "they can" it will fall from it's wings and become "just another fight".

I can't remember his exact words from last year, but I do remember Hannes saying something to the effect of :
"If you are going to whine about whether a shot is called or not, you should go away now, because this is not the fight for you."
Still makes me smile.

I can not agree more.....nope, can't. This fight should be left to those who want it. Leave the yellow and black sticks at home, and the mindset that a shot is good. Let the slain man say he be slain. We know when we are bested. It SUCKED to get shanked last year, but I KNEW I was bested and laid there on the field. I wait 364 days to meet warriors not whiners.

Thank you for the nice words, folks.
Actually, what's funny is the COTT and The Deed are what inspired me to create, if that makes any sense. I needed focused events like these to reinvigorate my interest in our game, as I was headed for an indefinite hiatus. If I hadn't found this, I can honestly say I'm quite sure I wouldn't be playing anymore.
Now I can't imagine not playing.
So my thanks really go out to all of you that take part in this Combat, as you've inspired me to create and you've inspired me to whole-heartedly continue along this journey.

Hello all,
Just a reminder to all interested in fighting in the CotT. Even if you are not already recruited and you want to take part in the CotT you should show up. Due to the nature of Pennsic War people inevitably fail to show up for the deed and we have extra slots open.
Many people have been invited on the day of the deed by presenting themselves to the Captains just before the deed starts.
Murdock is a prime example.
Cheers,
Earl Nigel MacFarlane KSCA

What is your head size? I bought a stainless bascinet with houndskull that has been used before in CotT when I thought I still had time to complete a 14th and a 15th cent kit. As the 15th cent kit is still a work in progress the 14th is just notes and bits gathering dust. If the helm fits I would be honored for you to wear it.
