Greetings all,

I know some people have talked about hanging around after the deed is finished each year and that a few sometimes do. I have a bottle of mead that was put down specifically for this year's deed by a gentleman that fought in the CotT for the first time last year but cannot make Pennsic this year. He gave me the bottle while I sat the High Thrones of Ealdormere this past Winter while I visited the Barony of the Cleftlands. He asked that I share it with the French combatants after we finish the deed and so I will. Bring your mugs.

Greetings to all! I have been lurking on the Archive for about year now, and as time draws very near for Pennsic, I wanted to finally say hello.

Last year, at my very first Pennsic and my very first SCA event no less, I was wandering around having just fallen off the turnip cart, I came across a group fighting that stopped me in my tracks. I was mesmerized. I immediately thought, "That is the time of my persona. That is when I want to be."

I soon learned it was the Combat of the Thirty.

Although, I am newly authorized (the ink is not even dry), I don't have expectations of joining this battle this year, but I will attend, and I hope to meet many of you in person. Perhaps next year when I get a bit more experience, I will be ready to participate.

Nothing quite like getting started in the right direction.

I've heard the CotT referred to many times as "armour porn" but I like to think it is much more than that. People of a similar mind set coming together to fight to the point of exhaustion. I know last year I was ready to hurl at the end of the deed. It was exhilarating to realize how hard we were pushing ourselves mentally as well as physically. A very medieval experience indeed. Not being captured as the Captain and, at the time, reigning Prince was very fortuitous. My pockets were not lighter when I left the field that day.
I hope this deed continues to inspire people towards a brilliant future for themselves and for the SCA. We need more deeds of arms in the Society. They all don't have to be high profile. I know that the Challenge of the Couter started off simple enough and continues along that same path of simplicity. The simplicity of that ongoing deed is a great part of its charm I think.

Yes to all above.
For me its where I feel closest to what it is I am trying to experience.
Last year the 30 was my first time in armour since my surgery.
Over a year out of armour and then jump into the 30, wonderful experience, so sore and tired and happy.
I will so miss the experience this year.

Even though it is COMPLETELY outside of my portrayal, (Hey, what's 1000 years between friends?) watching the COTT is a must for my Pennsic.

Really inspiring.

I am sure it is just an accidental oversight that any names have been left off of any list. I am sure that both Johannes and I may have missed adding some people that we have spoken with.

Please, show up for the deed and all will be rectified.

Also, I am pretty sure that Johannes is already on the road to Pennsic and may not check the AA again.

Once again, as real life intervenes, we inevitably have some people that have confirmed previously that they will attend and then are unable to. That being said, we have always accepted petitions to join the deed on the day itself. I for one, was contacted yesterday and informed that one of my invitees was likely not going to attend.

I'm going to be making plaques to display personal heraldry but I was also thinking of maybe doing some to designate the English/French forces? I heard quite a few mention that it was hard to designate friend from foe (which is part of the fun, too) so I decided I figured I'd knock a few out.

Completely unrelated; I'm going to have to make weapons at War. Unexpected speedbump but it could be worse.

I have always liked the fact that recognition, personal heraldry,
the cries of St George etc are what is used to id team mates as opposed to some type of France/England id tag

Quick Question: I know the CoTT is inspired by an arranged scuffle between English and French knights, squires and men-at-arms...so I am curious about the origin of harnesses allowed at the Pennsic CoTT. Is it restricted by the spirit of the 14th Century to continental armours, IE English, French, Italian and German styles of armor circa 1351?
I ask because one of my future goals is to one day participate in the Deed, but my persona is swedish, and my harness is an idealized example of lamellar form The Battle of Wisby, 1361. So I'm trying to figure out what needs to be changed to meet requirements for the Deed.

Sweden is still on the continent, and England isn't. My guess would be it is acceptable (but double check with one of the captains) since many people wear Wisby coats of plates.

I am not in charge of anything so I am just giving a personal opinion here.

I would think about wearing a coat of plates or maille or both, there are dozens of CoPs at Wisby and only the one lamellar which there is evidence is was really old and it was likely some town persons personal hand me down.

For those of us who cannot be there this year, one thing that would be exceptional, is if one of the amazing photographers who capture this event would be allowed to take photos of each participant in their harness.

Its true that this event is one of the best exhibitions of total armor porn in the SCA, it would be great to see all the differences of all the participants.

I am franticly finishing my 14th cent. Kit in hopes of participating in this year’s Combat of the Thirty. I would like to side with the French if possible.

I will not be able to take the field this year. I feel my kit is not up to snuff, and will not risk bringing the group down by trying to squeeze in to such noble company.

Agreed, I don't leave until Friday and I still have some room also.

I appreciate the offers, but it has more to do with the state of my kit not meeting my expectations. It is in disrepair and should have been maintained and upgraded after GW's. I will work on it during the off season to be ready for next year.

A full frontal shot of every fighter who particpaites, perhaps one with helm on, and one holding helm in arm, smiling.


That way they can get their names put on each one, kinda like a baseball card.


Can someone please get a good frontal pic of each one?

I talked to Leo briefly this morning and asked how this went.

The English won this year, quite handily from what Leo said.

Hmmm...this year Leo and his retinue switched sides to the English. This year the English won.
