Combat of the Thirty?
We are safe home from Pensic and the CotT. The day was absolutely GRAND. Numbers favored Johannes very slightly, the fighting was mean business.
Both Genevieve and I had a fantastic time. We look forward to taking the field next summer with our friends to trade stout blows and hearty laughter.

Best.experience.ever.
Just arrived home so will form a more cognizant report later but, suffice to say, this has now become nearly my sole motivation within our game.
And no, Leo/William, I never did find that other piece of your axe that you lodged in my arm during the second battle. Apologies.

As always this was a highlight of Pennsic for me. There is no where in the SCA that I feel more at home than among the combatants in this deed. I have such a hard time leaving the field when it is done.
Also, it was a little extra special for me this year having accepted Count Rhys' challenge to consider 'death' in this deed as 'dead for Pennsic'. I didn't die, but the extra risk I felt heightened the experience for me (especially when the first opponent I ran in to starting thrusting at me like mad.

My friend who came from Hawaii had only a few hours to see an SCA battle. I brought him to the COTT and he was amazed. You guys just earned the society another recruit, well done!

Lol, you can see me being led off the field at the very top right of the screen at 00:41.

Many apologies for missing this after I had asked to be a part of it... My wife was ill enough that I had to put off my departure several days, and ended up arriving late, late Sunday night.
Participating in the Thirty is still something I yearn to do; perhaps I'll have better luck next year than I did this time.

My version of the first fight (the one that counts) is up now on You Tube;
http://youtu.be/knCZxouunS4
My usual cameraman was unavailable as he is shooting a TV series so a spectator did the shooting for me. Pretty decent for no training and one minute of instruction IMHO.

Umm ... knowing this will only encourage some of us to club our most noble cousins all the faster and harder next year (oh and we'll bring some buds next time) ... hell .. might change the battle cry from 'St. George' ...

Ugh, I'm getting smashed by two fellows (whose name I don't recall) at 00:37 (lost my footing) and am getting tent-pegged until 00:44 and finally lead across the screen captured at 00:51.
So, upon reflection of both videos it looks as if I don't last a full minute into either the first or the second battle.
That's damn embarrassing.
I'm sorry that I didn't provide a better challenge to my adversaries and will endeavor to make for a much more seasoned foe by this time next year. That's a promise.

I would love to see if someone caught my backwards somersault on film...would be curious if it looked as clumsy as I felt....
Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit. -Aristotle
I thought this was an awesome spectacle to behold!
It was damned hot and I salute those of you who donned so much gear to participate in such hostile conditions (sadly I had dumped my cool looking garb for just cool, as in temperature, garb (..ie braies, boots, and an aba) while I helped attend HerRM Northshield
Many of the kits were truly inspiring.
Getting to meet some of you was a great honor as well.
The only thing I saw that was disappointing was one of the participants was wearing tennis shoes (slightly hidden by sabatons)

Again, another COTT has passed and I had a great time. Once again it had to be the best fighting experience of the war.
Only grabbed one lucky capture of a knight who might have been 5 yards from escorting a fellow Frenchman from the field. I was paid back in kind when I turned around and got jumped by two English knights.
My personal highlight though was in the second battle and dueling w/ Sir Johannes at the start of the engagement. I had no chance of capturing him after being craftily led back to his lines, but I gave it my best shot.
My only disappointment was that the flow of the battle didn't lead me to Tobiaz or Eadric of Stonemarche. Friendly foes are the some of the best fights.

It was another grand day!
I spent most of my time tied up in a match against James B.
Larmer and I teamed up on him, stripped his pole arm away and he went after me with his dagger! Talk about a fun fight... me deflecting dagger shots with the haft of my mace and keeping him tied up and not allowing a clear thrust! With Larmer's help (spear point 6 inches from James' face), I was able to 'convince' James to surrender.
I then went back into the battle and screwed up and did not clobber Sir Stephen in the bargrill with my mace.. instead I let him get away and got myself cornered by about a dozen English troops. I had the momentary thought of charging Gabriella and making a grand spectacle of it, but by then Master Dru was too close to make the break...
One thing I realized... I forgot my dagger

In Sir Olafr's video you can see me backing up at 1:30 seconds with just my dagger and you are coming for me. Larmer and I are tied up at 1:44. At 2:00 you guys have me. 30 seconds of wrestling two guys at once winds you faster than you can believe.
When someone had a hand on my poleaxe (not seen in the video) and I could not find my teammates I knew I was doomed. I had hoped to kill Gilebert with the dagger and make a run for some polearms I saw piled up at the start of the battle
Really this is the closest you ever feel to real desperation on the field; losing actually cost you something and you really want to fight hard to get away when cornered.

That was me you caught on the way to the side and well caught I was, I had no where to go and no help in sight!
I must now confess, I did quietly hope for your demise when you were set upon by my fellow Countrymen; not that I wished you ill but so that I could return to the fray.
