SyrRhys, have you ever been to a LARP? Some may surprise you. I do both Reenactment and LARP, and for quite some time now. I have seen LARPs here in Germany that were tournaments with 150 participants that included not a single Fantasy Type character, only knights and People from pseudo medieval countries like from SCA kingdoms. All period tentage, no plastic, no visible water coolers, no pop soda cans,80 or more percent period looking boots and shoes. A counted blows tournament with Latex weaponry and a behourd style combat with sand sacks.

My regular group has a higher armour and Authenticity standard than a LOT of reenactment societies, including the SCA. Only real armor is allowed, no plastic, aluminum or Titanium, no "gray fabric counts as plate". Yes, there are magicians and elves but that is just a matter of personalö preference. I do not see you or anybody being all over Civil War or Napoleonic reenactors because "they can use their rifles or whatever it is they do there".

LARP Player, for the most part, play fantasy and pretend nothing otherwise. I have seen "Evil-Dead-Splatter-LARPS", Changeling LARPS (Nymps are a sight to behold, unless they are ugly), "Spaghetti Western LARPs", "Cyberpunk 2020 LARPs". LARPS are fun, they are supposed to be. And just because they are not your kind of game does not make it a bad game that you should bash left and right. IMHO we should be happy that there are games in town for everybody, and not "just" the SCA, otherwise the SCA would get every elf, vampire, cowboy and Ashe there is.

I know you are a blunt person, and I take no offense to that, I just hope I may be able to show you that not all stereotypes fit. You know that some people here in EUrope think that the SCA is a "football hemets and pads and sticks" fighting club? Would you not trake exception to that?

All the Best

It might be a matter of simple numbers. If we have more people than ever, we probably have more newbies than ever. Newbies are allowed to be inaccurate, that's why the SCA is bigger than other groups. If we have more newbies, we have more inaccuracies.

T-Bob points out that the average "age" for someone to start thinking seriously about accuracy is 10 years. Some are precocious (Like Conrad), or just early bloomers, but it takes a while.

So the next time you think you've seen the same blue plastic armor for the 16th time that day, check out the face. He might just be one of 16 newbies.

I agree, you dont have to use majic spells to be a LARP. In fact I think every living history, reinactment group members are into LARP. Civil war reinactors,as authentic as they are, are not REALLY civil war soldiers from the 1860's. If you are portraying someone from the past, you are LARP, in my humble opinion.Even actors on Broadway,TV, and in the movies are LARP. Its not a bad thing, unless you get too "ate up" with persona...Otto

So Otto, you consider everybody to be part of a LARP group... hmmm... interesting... you may have a point if you only use the title "Live Action Role Playing" to describe the other groups. This title would include all recreation groups, thespians, heck you could probably stretch it out to include religions. But... the title is just that and doesn't describe the makeup, beliefs or rules of the individual groups. Each has it's own place and it's own rewards for the people participating within it. If people want to play in different groups... great the more the marrier, but you better play by their rules.."when in Rome". If you don't like the rules find a different game that better suits you. To try and make a civil war group to except vampires is just ridiculous and I think the same thing goes for other groups.

I dont think Vampires have any place in a Civil War reinactment group, in fact I dont think they have anyplace in the SCA,but thats just my opinion, I'm sure there are elves, and Vampires that would disagree. When I put on my armour or garb and go to an event,I'm role playing in my opinion, even though I seldom speak in "Old English" or tell people I'm a Saxon from the year 1402 LOL...otto
