Q's on running a Deed...

Post by MJBlazek »

So I would like to put together a Deed of Arms, and I was wondering if there was a general format to be followed, or if it was really up to my making?

Also I was wondering about Letters of Intent. I know to fight in Crown you need to submit one, is it acceptable to ask for one, or something like it for a Deed?

Depends on exactly what you are shooting for in your "end vision" as it were.

I found a free translation online of Rene of Anjou's book of the tournament if that would help. It's kind of a wacky read!

IMO:

1. Keep it historical. Look up historical deeds of arms and then replicate them as best you can.

2. Keep it fun. Enjoy it.

3. Keep it portable. There are many, many deeds of arms in history. Be prepared to do it again.

4. Matched weapons. Everyone loves matched weapons because it immediately shows you aren't trying to game the system.

5. Keep it fun.

Call me any time, let me know the where and whens.
I am taking an SCA break, but a deed of arms gets my attention.

There are accounts of several Deeds here in the Archive, including one by Sir Bryce de Byram and one of my own.

Here is the link to my Deed. I have pictures, which I haven't yet posted this long after. I didn't have the wherewithal then; I should create an album of them.

I had a small pennon with an anchor and the Roman numeral XXXV. I raised it wherever I sought to continue the Deed. I had a book in which those I met would record at least their names and any comments they might care to add. Those, a small folding table, and a folding chair were all that went with me for the Deed. I took to every fighting event a great sword, a great axe, a glaive, my regular broadsword and shield, a spear, and a dagger.

well I really like the idea of a 100 Counted Blows.

I would like to fight my opponents, till I have recieved, or dealt (whichever comes first) 100 counted blows, and if receiving comes first, then until the gallery has reached its fill.
(So if I get 10 opponents 10 bouts of 10 counted blows, etc.)
All bouts to be fought with matched weapons, the guests choice.

I would like it to be that each opponent must fight for a muse or a cause.
The reasons I would like to have letters of intent submitted is so that I can know who or what that muse/cause is so that I may pay appropriate tribute.

Try a series of deeds.

75 counted blows is as high as I've seen historically. And when Sean & I did 75 counted blows, I was very, very thankful Sir Tascious made a mistake and counted 75 total blows between us instead of 75 apiece. I was very tired.

I question if I could have gone 75 apiece. :(

Make matched greatswords (easy to make as compared to pollaxes) of varying lengths. Then at every event you attend offer counted blows of an increasing number & multiple opponents.

For example:

Event 1: 3 counted blows

Event 2: 6 counted blows

Event 3: 12 counted blows

Event 4: 12 counted blows, every man for himself, as many dance partners as you can get at once

Event 5: 24 counted blows

Event 6: 24 counted blows, every man for himself, all at once

Event 7: 48 counted blows

Event 8: 100 counted blows

This will let word of mouth be your herald. Maybe one fighter helps the first time but he tells ten friends about Event 2... It becomes a nice pyramid scheme.

Slight change. Please fight singles to X # of blows individually, and then the same number of blows the next event, but everyone for themselves, all at once. Then double the number for the next event for X # of blows individually, etc....

Event 1: 3 counted blows, individually, one at a time.

Event 2: 3 counted blows, every man for himself, as many dance partners as you can get at once

Event 3: 6 counted blows, individually, one at a time.

Event 4: 6 counted blows, every man for himself, as many dance partners as you can get at once

Event 5: 12 counted blows, individually, one at a time.

Event 6: 12 counted blows, every man for himself, as many dance partners as you can get at once

Event 7: 24 counted blows, individually, one at a time.

Event 8: 24 counted blows, every man for himself, as many dance partners as you can get at once

Event 9: 48 counted blows, individually, one at a time.

Event 10: 48 counted blows, every man for himself, as many dance partners as you can get at once

Event 11: 75 counted blows, individually, one at a time.
