In the middle ages, helms really functioned as sturdy hats that doubled as buckets. No one really wore one when fighting. Take a look at the Richard Gere documentary "First Knight", he immediately removes his helm when engaging the enemy.
As far as shields? Only wussies use shields. They were mainly used to show your heraldry before the battle started, then they were cast aside at the onset of combat.
I mean, really, don't you read?

You have to hand it to the whole production team on LotR, even if you disagree with the results, they did put a tremenodous amount of effort in trying to get the feel right.
the resaon so few folks wear helms in period movies is you have to see the actors faces. it's a hollywood thing. beisdes, you can't make the actors all uncomfortable now can you?;-)

Well, the reasoning is, "I paid $1.2 million for Richard Gere, I want the audience to see Richard Gere!" (That wouldn't be my choice, of course - IMHO, he's one of the myriad reasons that "First Knight" sucked rocks!)
___________
"Hmm- it's 10th century Camelot, he's wearing a 16th century breastplate, a 19th century poet's shirt, and 'Boy Of London' leather pants circe 1984. And the Knights of the Round Table are wearing uniforms stolen from an episode of "Voyager". They're all time travelers!"

All right you guys.
One thing you might glean from the interview is that he makes clear that it is a movie telling a story rather than a documentary, and that what he created was NOT a matrial art, but something more akin to a dance.
The play, as the Bard said, is the thing.
Though if I was tromping all over Mordor, I would put the priority to traveling light. I might leave the helm and shield at home. Anyone care to climb a mountain in full plate?
Sorry, this should be in Off-Topic, shouldn't it?

I saw that Errol Flynn film "The Warriors" for the first time a few months ago, and we were all just sitting around giggling at it's more ridiculous aspects until the big siege scene happened.
The cannon blow open the gates, and all you see are these foldable shields to protect the soldiers from arrow fire. Well, in a few seconds these things move and the first figure you see emerge from the smoke is Du Guesclin- a thick, tiny guy with his visor down.
Kara laughed and said- "Honey, it's you! You look so CUTE."
Sigh.
