Jareth,
I think you misunderstood my point as well as others. I don't want to set weight limits in any type of fighting. My point was that in a full contact fight skill may not be the winning factor. The fight may be decided by a big fighter throwing/pushing smaller fighters from the field.
I also believe, as I said before, that the fighters in this type of tourney should be heavily armoured.

The Grand Limitation
I agree that you should be heavily armoured.
those crown contender types tend to be lighter armoured and I believe at 5'9 and 144lbs that my armour would withstand a pounding long enough to get into duke Xs face and throw for the skin if it came down to it. a couple of very hard skin shots would be discouraging to almost anybody even when thrown by a pipsqueek like me.
however I personally feel after going a submission round(15+ good blows?) that went until I was grounded that the idea of this combat(I am very sad now that I was so distraced by my kings wishes I fight in the allied champions tourney. a chance to push the boundries doesnt come along too often.) is to allow for displays of real? chivary. that means not throwing repetively for the skin and enjoying the privelege of being heavily armoured and not having to call light/any old shot that hits your armour while at the same time caring about how your opponent is fairing so he/she is not injured by your ignorance of his/her condition.
further more next time I will ask my oppnent to agree that the grounding rule be suspended for our fight. I would have no problems yielding if I was grounded and my opponent was raining what I will term chivalric (not exceesive and meant to injure)blows on my head while attempting to rise.
I fight roman rules(anything goes) all the time at non sca demos and being grounded does not stop the fight even when my knight has pinned me and is headbutting me something fierce. we do use the convention of a weapon kill or three hard face punches/knees(kicks) to the groin as a kill though..
sometimes the marshall breaks it up or we start rolling toward the crowd. definitely demonstrates the effectiveness of armour and why we use weapons to the crowd for it is darn hard to hurt someone in armour with out locks/joint breaks.

Vebrand,
You're right, I misunderstood your points; I made a poor assumption and I apologize. I misinterpreted the concern you voiced over size differences for a suggestion that this was a problem that needed to be addressed.
I agree with your point that in this sort of competition, skill alone may not be the winning factor. I also agree that more heavy armor should be suggested for this style of combat so as to avoid injuries.
That having been said, I continue to maintain that there is no reason to add extra rules to disqualify fighters just because their opponent was injured. I say treat this style of tournament like any other SCA combat and rely on the honor of the combatants to call shots honorably and treat their opponents with respect.

Jareth,
No arguement there. I understand the original thread of this topic and to some degree agree with the idea. If someone hurts another fighter from intent or careless actions then they should be pulled from the tourney. I just don't know if the SCA as a whole is ready or capable of the level of marshalling for this type of tourney. I always like to see a tourney won on skill and ability not just bulling someone over because you are bigger.

>like they had in period tournaments ...
Yep, you got it. On this particular topic, I would rather sacrifice the period style, if only because I disagree philosophically with concept. Like many who have responded on this list, I feel that judges take away an opportunity for us to test our own sense of honor.
Now this isn't to say that I wouldn't mind the occasional tournament using completely period rules and a judging system. It's just that I want personal judging to be the standard for the majority of events.
