Well, my work has determined that it's necessary to send me to Oakland next week. I'm not sure what days I'll be in town yet and I may be getting together with relatives. The office I'll be at is at 3775 Alameda Avenue if that makes any sense to anyone. Not sure yet where I'll be staying. I guess it's really close to the Oakland Colliseum. Anyone around there? I don't know what my time will be like yet, but it never hurts to find out in advance if "cool people" are around.

Morgan,
I live in Berkeley, right next door. Send me a note if you want to hang and/or cross swords.

Go to BART practice! If you do, let me know which day and I'll try to swing down.

DETAILS man, DETAILS!

I don't know what days I'll even be there yet...but if I can, I'd love to make a practice. I just fired Dmitry an email that said basically I can probably put together an armour kit, but I'd need to borrow a stick and a board...is this doable? Give me details on the day, and I'll see what I can work out. I'll know more tomorrow what days I'm going to be in town. I'd love to make that big practice.

Depends on the board you want, but yes, it's doable.
Bart: Thursday nights in the west side of the Rockridge Bart station parking lot (College Ave), starts at 7 (though lately it's been more like

.
Mission: Tuesday nights starting about 7, on Mission College campus -- directions to follow.
Mission is GIANT now, lots of very high caliber fighters. Bart is on a bit of a downswing, but you can generally find at least 7-8 people there, a couple of them Knights.

My guess: Mission is doable, BART is probably not doable...I'm probably travelling back to Dallas on Thursday...but if we do what we're there for on Monday, I may be available on Tuesday. I'll try to find out more tomorrow and post here.
The board doesn't much matter. I fight normally with a long narrow heater/kite type shield...but hey, a knight should be proficient with all weapons of tournament combat...and I think that should include shields.

Oh...can you get me the address of the mission practice so I can plug it into my map program?

I'll email you directions later on.
Shieldwise -- I've got a centergrip kite I can loan you, could probably find a centergrip round, might swing a curved heater assuming roommate will loan it out. If I have my new shield done by then, you can also use my square. Or I could just give you a 6'4" glaive and you won't have to worry about a shield at all

Morgan, you absolutely gotta go to the Mission Practice. I went there two or three years ago (its what convinced me to try a smaller shield) and I had a wonderful time right up until then-Count Uther broke my helm. Fighting is good, hard, fast and fun.... I envy you...
Lie if you have to, you'll find it worth it.

Okie dokey... I'll be in Oakland from Sunday to Wednesday. I ***SHOULD*** be able to make the Mission practice and I have directions. Shouldn't be hard to find. I'm going to bring my big bag so I'll have armour. I'm not bringing sticks or a shield...just too bulky. Well, maybe I can bring a stick. The shield just won't go in the bag.

JP...thanks for the heads up...I'm sure I'll have a hell of a good time.

Morgan,
The maximum bag dimensions for most airlines is a total of L + W + D = 62" . For my 36" x 24" shield, this allows me 2" of depth. I just pull the basket hilts off my sword and shield, strapping tape a sword or two to the back of the shield and put the basket hilts in my armor bag. This, of course, requires two checked bags of whatever your baggage allowance is for armor and shield, but a few airlines like Southwest still allow three bags plus a carryone. Most only charge about $40 for an extra checked bag, if necessary.
Regards,
Jean Richard

Hey Morgan,
If you can't fit a shield, but you can fit a stick in the bag, you could switch to using a MADU!

Actually, I could probably fit a shield if I take the time to repair it on Friday night...which I should do if I'm going to ElfSea Defender on Saturday before going to Oakland on Sunday. I'll see. But yeah, I may just bring a second checked bag for the old armour. I really hate checking my helmet.

Just wanted to say "Wow, I had a really great time" at the practice in Oakland. Everyone was terrific, and it was good to get to cross swords with Dmitriey finally.

Next time we'll have to fight each other with our normal gear. That was weird

I am glad you had a good time. How's that leg?

I discovered I like peripheral vision.. you never know till you lose it.

I was wondering if Scott would de-lurk for a post.
I have a nice shiner on the inside of my thigh were a number of you hit me. Dang short shields.

I'm going to make one now to practice with it.
And of course, look me up if you get out my way.

Inside of your thigh? Morgan what were they doing to hit the INSIDE of your thigh? This doesn't sound like fighter practice to me

They were fighting a long shield Ansteorran who happened to have a short Westie shield. I fight goofy foot. So they'd throw a leg shot to my left leg which I'd normally block by turning my body into the shot which rotates my leg out of the way and my shield into the shot. Same effect, but the shield wasn't long enough, so the shot ended up hitting my RIGHT leg (forward) just above the knee on the inside.
Funny, huh?
