I think you are right to a large degree about swords being a matter of styles. I always have two swords with me. One really short one for when I want to go fast and furious in close quarters and my regular length sword.
A funny story on this topic (sort of
)
I used to fight with a mace quite a bit. It was about the same length as my current short sword. My first coronet tourney I followed my knights advice and brought two weapons and my left arm harness to the eric each fight. Nearly everyone I fought would look at that short, fat mace and ask me which one I was going to use. I would look at them and say "I'm not sure...it depends how aggressive I feel."
Mind job = good.
