I read about a study done recently that came to the same conclusion. They compared 2% chocolate milk (if I remember correctly) to protein shakes and whatnot and found that chocolate milk gave better recovery results.

I have been doing that myself for about a year. Before that I used to (and still do) drink chocolate milk as a victory dance after some hard fighting :D

Depending on the brand you can get between 8 to 16 percent protein per serving. I prefer low fat 1 or 2 % just tastes better to me.

You can get it now at the grocery store in little milk boxes that don't need to be refrigerated unless opened. The Safeway by my house carries regular and chocolate ultra high temp pasteurized.

With the chocolate milk, they pedaled 49 percent longer and had a 57 percent increase in their work output as compared to the results after consuming a very popular carbohydrate sports drink (gator-something or another). Similar studies with similar results have been performed with swimmers and strength athletes (weightlifters). Since MMA requires both explosive strength and tremendous endurance, milk appears to be a well-qualified and modestly priced performance drink.

I thought maybe 10% but not ~50% better!

OK, chocolate milk (in those "juice boxes") will be in my armour bag/box!

I was skeptical about the scary milk you don't have to put in the fridge, but someone dropped a bunch off at the station and nobody wanted to try it. I drank it all. Soooo tasty.

yea I got sick off some of that stuff on a field problem when i was in the army "does not need refrigeration" =/= "safe to leave out in direct sun light in the summer for a few days then serve"

 Not so awesome for those of us who love chocolate milk but are lactose intolerant.

If I want to sit at home away from others as to not offend them I will drink some chocolate milk and deal with the consequences but if there are other humans around I just avoid it.

My wifes mother is a Dietitian in the Boston Ma area (PLUG) and she recommended Chocolate milk to me when I started Boxing. She said to look for 2% that has been minimally pasteurized and homogenized so that the cream fats are still in it. Something about the protein level being better that way. The local stuff I get only keeps about 3 days in a fridge so Pennsic is pretty much out for that.
Its great because it also gets the taste of mouth guard out of my mouth after an hour long sparring session.

I wonder tho, if the results are about the same with goat's milk? I'm told those of us with lactose issues don't typically have problems with goat's milk.

Haven't had the nerve to test the theory, tho.

For a Muddy Irishman as I mix it at the bar, take a pint glass, drizzle a little bit of chocolate syrup down the inside (emphasis on A LITTLE). Pour in chilled chocolate milk... whole milk is best, preferably with real sugar and cocoa... add Guinness at cellar temp, or refrigerated if you prefer. Enjoy.
The effect is something along the lines of a bittersweet chocolate.

Maeryk put me on to that a few months ago and I've been looking at it. The combination of factors is interesting. They addressed the carb/protein ratio in the article so I won't discuss that. Whey protein, which is what milk contains, is the most easily absorbed protein so it's great for after a workout. The carbs are a mix of complex-ish carbs and simple carbs so you get a quick replenishment followed by a more moderate replensihment so you don't sugar crash. Further, some research suggests that loading up on lactose helps fuel the glycolysis process which helps both post-workout recovery and allows for increased performance in later efforts. The chocolate is interesting because it contains small amounts of serotonin and theobromine. The latter is a vaso-dialator closely related to caffeine which can help improve blood flow, reduce swelling, and stimulate the heart.

I don't know what to make of the milk-fats. What info I can find is either contradictory or inaccessible to the layman. Right now I'm operating on the tenuous theory that some fats are an essential part of the process, but I'm toying with using skim milk and supplementing with an Omega-3 supplement to take the place of the milk fats.

Pretty cool stuff. Turns out nature still does things best. :)

Drink a quart of chocolate milk and then run through the combat archers! ;)

"In a treaty today, all the combat archers in the SCA pledged to put down their bows forever if Count Johnathan would put down the chocolate milk, forever." ;)
