Unsafe helm design (SCA)

There are no rules concerning external projections from a helmet. (official SCA rulebook)

Has anyone seen a marshall fail a helmet due to an unsafe projection? (large brim, tall spike/cone, "viking horns", etc) or a helm that otherwise adhered to the rules as written?
Do you think that a long projection might act as a lever-arm that might unsafely twist your neck?

Curious Charlie.

Given the length of some of the snouts on pigfaced helms I've seen, I'd say marshalls are unlikely to fail something just because it sticks out too far from the head. I've never heard of this happening.

nothing against having projections so long as they not pose a safety hazard..

welding 16P nails to the skull of your helm would definitly make me raise an eyebrow and bounce your helm for example.

Seen lots of things like this in a "crested" tourney.. As long as they're considered safe, it's a non-issue.

The marshals also don't want to see something that will damage your opponants weapons.

I know someone who welded a bunch of 1" steel squares all over the outside of his helmet and the marshals wouldn't let him use it because it would tear up everyones rattan. He told me that he made it that way so people would be afraid to hit him in the head. His long term plan was to make a complete suit in this fashion.

Didn't Caid pass a rule requiring everything on a helm to be 1/4" wide, including crests and flutes?

Off-topic, but:

Obviously, the solution is to wait until he's not wearing the helmet, then clobber him! Image That'll larn 'im!

That's correct.. Almost cost me my brand new helm.. Fortunately AB (White Mtn Armoury) came through and did a little custum job on my crest.

PS. Still can't thank hium enough for doing that for me. If I ever get the chance to meet Adam in person I need to sit him down and buy him a pint of his favorite libation!

No need to thank me Xanthier, its my job to build you a helmet that passes inspection.
I have no real issue with the rule, what made it slightly annoying is that is is an accepted unwritten rule, and since that rule was unwritten you and i had no real way of knowing about it, the end result could have been your helemt failing, the expence or mailing the helmet to me for modification, and the pain in my but taking the crest of, throwing 3 hrs worth of work in the trash and starting over.
Fortunatly you had the forthought of showing the design around and getting some input.
Fortunatly the wide crest looks cool, and is not any harder to make.
I will however let you by me a pint of Beamish or Guinness Image

I have a "spike" on the top of my helm. (Like an onion top bascinet only slightly more extreme) and I have never been told I couldn't fight in it.
