These are the pictures of the orrigional mace from we found -where, on Sothebys?

And these are the pictures of the mace I made, with one of those little blocks of chalk you use in pool for perspective.
Capn' Atli, I think you had a valid point about the ends being trimmed becasue of a flaw in the smithing. For the life of me, I can't think of another reason for that darn cusp! Mine obviously DOESN'T have the "estucion" or whatever you want to call it. Other than that, the dimensions are pretty darn close, although it still needs a good bit of "tweaking". The edges will be ground until they're straight and rounded over, and the welds will either be ground down or re-melted when I get my hands on a TIG. I've thinned the fins substantialy to put in a "belly" at the edge, and it's helped reduce the weight -some. It needs more -this sucker's HEAVY! The handle was obviously covered with something -the origional was only 3/4" wide, which is too small to comfortably hold- so I'll be doing a leather wrap, I think.

This is my "fixer-upper".

The first is a picture of the Machete I started with. They said it was stainless, but I don't believe them. It rusted, it's springey, and it holds a wicked edge. As you can see by the monogram carved into the handle, I had already replaced the uncomfortable plastic handle with a nice wooden one, but the darn thing was STILL so unballanced you couldn't use it for long. So I decided to to a little work on it...

This is what I have now. As you can see by the shape of the blade, I'm shooting for something close to the Mispronounski Bible, but it's also a testbed for a wire-wrapped handle. That WOULD have been the wire I was going to use, but a) I found the 16 guage wire too uncomfortable the way it was, and when I tried to twist it more, it snapped. So I'll be experementing with other types of wire. The hilt furnature and pommel are not yet made.

And a picture of both together, along with my newly-made Kettlehat.

The Maciejowski falchion you did looks fun. How does it handle? I'm also wondering what type of mounts you plan for it (pommel and crosshilt)?

The falchion is FAST.

I feel a little guilty swinging it, I think it's GOT to be underweight and disproportioned, but I LOVE it.
I cut about an inch into the blade to give me room to put on a cross, and when I taped on the hilt and pommel from a large dagger I made, it moved the balance up to FOUR INCHES from the hilt!!! It used to be at eight. You can actualy fence with this thing. When I made my mom hold it, she said "Wow, I'd like to have one of these to cut off ham hocks..."

While I'm uncertain about it's current butchering abilities, I DO know that when it was a machete, it was perfectly capable of cutting thru a deer's leg-bone in one swipe Image

The hilt is going to be minimalist -probably a thick disk, a small cross at most, like something out of the maciejowski bible. The pommel is going to look like an extention of the handle -Oakeshott would call it an "irregular" Image
