SCA New Years Resolutions
SCA New Years Resolutions
The last days of 2010 are slipping through our fingers at a rapid pace, and 2011 is readying to damn anew.
I offer this thread as a response to the "Confessional" thread.
Here is the place for you to make your reslooution, to be documented and put in the open for all to see.
I will begin with mine.
I resolve this New Year to fight all that approach me. To let all personal beefs, or disagreements of the past fall to the wayside, and to meet evey opponent who challenges me in good faith on the field with my personal best in both Combat and Attitude.
If they fail to uphold the same on thier end, it is on thier head and honor, not mine.
I will give no less than 110% of my whole into every fight anew. And each win or loss will be counted as an individual instance, not as a gauge to the total of mine or my opponents person.
This is my resolution.
What is yours?

Not to miss any of my regular fighting practices twice in a row without a really good reason.
Not to miss any tourneys within day-tripping distance without a really good reason.
Some time during the year to get off my ass and do "Couch-to-5K," "200-Sit-Ups," and "100-Push-Ups."

I've started training at a local MMA gym, and I'm getting back on the field - heavy, and I'm returning to my roots and picking up rapier (I was a modern fencer in my teens).
There's a new pell half-started in my garage.
It looks like I'll be hitting Lilies AND possibly Pennsic this year.
I've missed putting a stick to someone for a long time (due to medical issues) and things have changed to the point I can start whacking people again.

I've gone over things I'm changing this year, but here are my goals and dreams for 2011 that I am going to do all I can to make happen:
Tourney Resolutions
-Win Mannanon again
-Win Ymir
-Win Spring Crown
Non-Tourney-Related
-Help aspiring new fighters in my area get started
-STOP 'fight and runs'; no more showing up at the lysts, fighting, then going home...I've recently started staying for court and feast, had a LOT of fun doing so, and I'm going to keep doing it
-Go to Gulf Wars and possibly Pennsic
My goals are ambitious, and that's how I like 'em.

What i'd like to resolve to do, i don't think i can.
I'll shoot for getting back to Jara's practice 3 times a month. I need to practice more.

Hmmm. Resolution for fighting for 2011....
To be a better squire.
Semi finals at Valor.
Make a new kit and repair my current one.
To help the fighters in my area become better.
Attend any fighting event I can.
Practice 2x a week and spend 1 hour daily with the pell.
Although my greatest ambition is less provincial... to win the honor of being 1st Spear, the Captain of the greatest fighting Order, without belts and chains, of the Knowne World.... the Fyrd of Calontir.

Finish up my late 12th, Early 13th cent kit.
Learn to fight again with a bad shoulder. Its not gonna get any better than what it is now. So basically need to relearn how to throw some shots differently, to avoid the pain I have when I throw them my old way.

After some issues this past fall I pretty much divorced myself from the SCA. It no longer held any more love for me after 25+ years and was a damn harsh mistress with little return. Grad school has actually taken on a new role as giving much more interest, challenge and reward.
I'll at least make this one commitment. Although I've found a new girlfriend (accounting & the finance fields) and was ready to utterly walk away from anything related to the LH & SCA might have had to offer me, I'll at least visit and hook up once and awhile with 'em. As I go through grad school and my CPA cert, I might come back once and again for the fun of it..
***************************************************************
Yeah .. ignore all this above. After the 'joyous' discussion of sump. laws in another thread it reminded me why I've come to despise the SCA and part of her after 25+ years. My pledge is to work on what right in my life with my wife, daughter and family and tell the SCA and alot of other LH groups to take their current attitudes towards their members and go screw themselves.
Life is hard enough w/o having your hobbies making it more of a pain.

When I get down I think of the friends and family that keep me going in the SCA.
Good luck in ALL your endeavors.

I resolve to:
Pay attention to the person who consented to teach me.
Do my dead level best to not waste his time.
Get off this damn skill plateau by doing #1 and #2.
Do more than fight at events.
Help anyone who asks with anything I am able.
Get my personal life moving again after my impending divorce. (That one's gonna be hard, I think.)

Back on topic....
I'm going to put together a 14th C kit and start fighting this year, fulfilling a deal I made with Leo. I wasn't able to do it last year due to a severe lack of funds, but now that I have a job and steady income, and a place of my own soon (I'm hoping) complete with a 2 car workshop, this is now possible.

Double wow. This is a bummer for me too, brother. Just within the past couple years I've seen the fire that you have - I really enjoyed your presentations at Sgt School and the work you've put into your kit on the field has been awesome (I've been partial to your early period kit of course). Count me as one of the guys sad to see to you go. That said...
My goal, specifically for next year, but hopefully always, is to be one of the guys that makes other people want to stay and play, to be one of the guys that others look up to as 'doing it right.' I may stumble, I may even fall, but I'll get up and try even harder. I hope to walk a path that inspires those who have inspired me.

Goal #1 is to hit more events with my squires even though regular SCA tournament combat now seems like something only a retarded monkey would engage in.
Goal #2 is to force myself to fight in a few conventional tournaments, even though I think the whole thing is something only a retarded monkey would engage in.
Goal #3 is to have fun while doing it.
