Hi,

The recent soon-to-be-legal two inch thrusting tips got me interested again in spearwork. The two-inch tips don't crush like the three inch tips do (you should see my poor three-inch tips...NONE survived the move to Colorado and look like **** ).

So how does one cut down the spears into thirds and be able to reconect them later? I think I could fit one or even two spears into my flight bag to go to Gulf Wars or another event (in 2012) with my flight-suit.

5. Shafts may be spliced using a fiberglass rod or tube with a sidewall of 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) of the same or equivalent material, having an outside diameter of 1 inch (25.4 mm) and a length of 8–12 inches (203–304mm). Only two splices will be allowed per spear shaft. Each end to be spliced shall be cut square and clean of cracks or frayed fibers. The rod shall extend at least 4 inches (101.6 mm) into each spliced end. One or both of these two methods shall secure the splice:
i. Epoxying both ends of the fiberglass rod before insertion.
ii. Epoxying one end of the fiberglass rod before insertion and thoroughly taping the splice over with fiber tape.

When all else fails, RTFM.

I would start by finding a reasonable price pultruded fiberglass splint.

I have talked with My KEM and the SEM the Equivalant material option is fiberglass rod no exceptions.... I seam to get this evertime I ask about equivalant materials...

It is machineable but the Expoy glassfiber dust is very bad for you and becomes airborn very easily. I used some wet/dry sandpaper and a spray bottle to sand down the rod just a little. and cut very shallow grove helps avoid vapor lock on the fittings with a utility knife.

I would sugest a fine tooth hacksaw and miterbox to ensure a clean square cut on the spear shaft. a quick layer of masking tape helps reduce brooming.

Mandrake was selling splints years ago, I think Icefalcon is the only one now but they are only available with the breakdown spear kit...
