Then take a 1/2" wide wood chisel (buy a new one for each large batch of axes you make) and chisel out a slot for the axe head to live in.

It's relatively easy if you cut down around the drawn lines first and then start scraping out the slot. SCRAPE OUT THE SLOT BY HAND, WITHOUT THE HAMMER. Only use the hammer on rough spots.

Put in a bit of Gorilla Glue, and using a bit of rattan from the cut slot, smear it around the slot- don't use too much.

Hello all, i'm eagerly reading this tutorial, it's awesome by the way.

I have a question though, how does this axe construction method satisfy the required 1/2 inch give between the axehead and shaft please?

The rules don't say that the give has to be between axehead and shaft.
http://sca.org/officers/marshal/docs/marshal_handbook.pdf wrote:3. If the weapon has a head, it shall not be constructed of solely rigid materials. The head shall be firmly and securely attached to the haft. The head shall allow at least a 1⁄2 inch (12.7 mm) of progressive give between the striking surface and the weapon haft.

Simply, the tutorial hasn't gotten to the part where the padding is attached, yet. It'll go on the face (edge/blade) of the axe, under the tape.

This construction method is fine as long as just the leather is used and padding is added.

Heyas

Thanks for the reply. I wasn't trying to cause controversy, I was just asking a simple question, I wasn't sure if the leather had enough give in it to satisfy the padding rules. Adding padding at the striking edges didn't occur to me.. ;o)

I'm curious (and rather dense). Why add the masking tape around the slot cut into the rattan? What purpose does it serve?

I can't figure it out.

Keeps the Gorilla Glue off the surface of the rattan? Makes it easier to keep the edges of the hole clean?

Marco is correct. gorilla glue expands and foams as it cures and is a bitch to sand/chisel, chip off if such a step hasn't been taken
