Recycled files for knifeblades: suggestions needed

I'm just wondering if anyone can give a little suggestion for webpages/forums which could give advice and tips for knifemaking from files?
Its not something I've ever done before, I always make my stuff from fresh steel, so I've got no clue where to look for info.
but I've got a very old, very blunted 15" bastard file that was originally my great-grandfather's, and grandfather and father's in turn.
its far too old and worn to be used as a tool, but its a lovely chunk of steel with a good distal taper on it, so I'm thinking because of its age and origin it would make a great dudgeon dagger or maingauche as a gift for my dad's 70th birthday next year. (he's inordinately proud of the weapons I make, for some strange reason...) and I think a gift that's made from the file steel that's been in the family for the better part of a century would be nice.
Anyone able to help out with suggestions where to go look?
