2013....Show us your kits --part Deux--

Post by InsaneIrish »

Well, I couldn't find a 2013 thread on showing off kits. Soooo, I made one!

I am submitting my buddy's kit. he's really worked at it and it is coming out really well.

He is a Varangian Guard, based his kit from an Osprey Book Ill. (yeah I know, not the most concrete of sources, but still nice)

Image

From the back with the Shield I painted for him (again based on the Osprey Ill)

the actual Osprey Ill. (he is the one in the middle right)

I recently made a picture showing the evolution of my armor, to what it is now in 2013. Let's see if I can make it show up here:

Potential future upgrades include a coat of plates or maille, and a pair of those crazy weightless badass gauntlets Nissan has.

Here's what my kit is looking these days... I redid the harness to trim each row with leather... I'm pretty happy with my "on field appearance"...

I must also add, having met Irish's friend Brockman and seen his kit up close, the picture doesn't do it justice! For a first attempt at a Varangian kit, he did an outstanding job! what you don't see is the little details that Brockman took the care of paying attention to! Well Done!

The early period kits posted so far are both outstanding. I'm curious why more guys aren't going with full sleeves to cover the bazubands... Very accurate to have a full length tunic even if a shorter one is worn over the top, and it would cover the ahistoric arm harness well, giving a clean and proper look.

I do hide my bazubands, but they have become a pain to do so. The elbow section on them is too wide. I am actually making a lower profile elbow cop and vambrace combo to fix this. (You may also recognize another archive denizen behind me who has an awesome hidden kit: Lorrcan

We had a Great time with it. Back when we were a Principality there was the Black Guard which was the Princes Personal Guard. I was the principal of the order and when we became a kingdom it sort of went away. Thought I would bring it back and we would all wear Capas and run around as a unit.

So YOU'RE the one who got that Super Sexy shovel face! When Rich made that helm it was super sexy, nice to see it being put on an appropriate kit.

Yea actually I went to buy the Helmet right as he posted it and the SEM Asoph bought it out from under me. He wore it a couple times and decided it wasn't for him so I snapped it up. I love the look of it. I know he's made one with Ducal Leaves on it that was the same and one that has a slightly different face but I love mine.

Rey, where'd you get your helm from? I love that look. I am in the market for one, but can't seem to find any that don't look like re-purposed Jason-style hockey masks.

It's a Knotwolf. It's on his site as Crusader 1b down in the middle period section. I pulled the Leather Drape off it and put a Master Knutt Chain on it.

Knotwolf...it would be. Looked too nice to be otr. The only two helms I see he has on his site won't suit me. Well...I'll keep an eye out (and a thread).

Thanks for the info, much obliged.

Can we make 2013 the year of the trimmed aventail?

I appreciate people putting them on helmets, they do look nicer with them, but when shipped they are typically much longer than needed and I see a lot of them that are 2-3" too long.

My suit--as worn for SCA combat--looks like this lately:

I hasten to add that the silly green plume is only seasonal decoration and not usually worn. Somebody on facebook said something about it looking like my head was being molested by a fraggle. In any case, ignore it; I'll get a proper crest later.

From Gulf Wars. It's not the full on kit; I'm still working on a pic in it.

I was inspired by the montage photos and also have one. Start date is 1985, ends with the above pic:

Here's what I was running at GW

https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos- ... 6699_n.jpg

https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos- ... 2367_n.jpg

Still doing the Varangian thing like I have for pretty much my entire haphazard SCA career. The bazu's show when the sleeves ride up, but otherwise, I'm pretty happy with the direction this is heading. The helm isn't right for the time period, but replacing it is very low on my list of priorities. Fits like a glove.

And, of course, usually there isn't a camera strapped to the front of my chin. lol!

Not many changes since the last posting. New helmet finally strapped and usable. New boots will be replaced with grieves as soon as they get in.

OK, here we go...

Here I am with the household clann colors I wear when fighting at war, heavyweight linen with the interior sleeves and bottom half lined in gold linen. The coat is made by my wonderful wife and all applique and embroidery done by me.

Image

Here is what I normally wear, medium weight linen with a design I found on a minai ware plate. Again coat was made by my lady and embroidered by me, we cheated and used a silk-screening thing my lady has to get the design on the linen.

Thanks Uilliam! I'm pretty happy with the progression my kit has made. I just wish I had known how kickass and lightweight spring steel is, back when I first started!

Yes, Josh spent years putting that kit together, imho its one of the best SCA plate kits as it has the look of "use" but not neglect.
