Subject: the approved list of Siloflex equivalents
ADVERTISEMENT
Greetings!
Here is the approved list of Siloflex Equivalents. It's pretty long, if
anyone would prefer the file, just let me know and I'll email it to you.
Siloflex Equivalents
1. Be manufactured to ASTM D2239 or ASTM D2737 Standards (which is a min. OD
of 1.25")
2. Be manufactured from PE3408
3. Be sized as 1 inch or larger (D2239 will mean 1" ID)
4. Have a SIDR rating of 15 or Lower (typically 100PSI or heavier pipe) or
Have a SODR rating of 17 or Lower (typically 100PSI or heavier pipe)
5. Be 100 psi or 160 psi
These guidelines will allow pipe to be used from a variety of manufacturers
and assure that it has a minimum size/thickness and the physical
characteristics we desire. When other variants get tested (such as PE3406,
other psi, ASTM D3035, larger outer diameters, etc). Keep in mind that the
only appreciable difference between the D2239 and the D2737 is that one is
sized on Inner Diameter and the other on Outer Diameter. Please read below
for descriptions and explanations of these terms.

http://www.homedepot.comCommon ASTM Standards used in Polyethylene Piping
ASTM D2239 is a specification for a controlled Inside Diameter or ID. This
specification is often called IPS-ID for Iron Pipe Size-Inside Diameter.
ASTM D2737 is a specification for a controlled Outside Diameter or OD. This
specification is often called CTS short for Copper Tube Size. It is also
sometimes called WST short for Water Service Tubing.
Common Material of Manufacture
Coiled PE pipe is produced most often from polyethylene resins with the ASTM
classification of PE 3408 and PE 3406. Most common for drinking water
applications is PE 3408. PE 3406 is not quite as strong and requires a
thicker wall to achieve an equivalent pressure rating and will therefore
weigh a little more.
SIDR or IDR
IPS pipe sizes produced to the ASTM D2239 standard are rated with a SIDR
number or Standard Inside Diameter Ratio. The SIDR is calculated by dividing
the Nominal ID by the Minimal Wall Thickness. For any fixed ID a LOWER SIDR
number will equate to a thicker wall and a stronger pipe with a higher
pressure rating.
SODR or SDR
OD controlled tubing produced to the ASTM D2737 or D3035 will have a SODR
rating. The SIDR is calculated by dividing the Nominal OD by the Minimal
Wall Thickness. For any fixed OD a LOWER SODR number will equate to a
thicker wall and a stronger pipe with a higher pressure rating.
Marking
ASTM, NSF, and AWWA standards provide that pipe and tubing must me marked at
frequent intervals. The labeling must include
1. The manufacturer's name or trademark
2. The standard to which it conforms
3. Pipe size
4. Material designation code (PE 3406 or PE 3408)
5. DWV if for drainage piping
6. Pressure rating if applicable
7. DR number or Schedule number
8. If the pipe is for potable water, a laboratory seal
If the pipe isn't labeled with that information then its quality might be
suspect.
Many thanks to Lord Eadric Anstapa who did the hard work of researching
where to get the equivalents, what the different terms mean, etc. His
information was invaluable in formulating this document. Any errors and
typos are mine, please let me know if you find any. If anyone finds another
equivalent material or a store (especially online ones) that sells Siloflex
or an equivalent material (as defined above), please send me the
information. Thank you. I will be updating this as we learn of new
"finds". Please feel free to forward this on, but please keep the five
points of specifications. Thank you.
