Buckler With thrusting tip

Post by Aethelwulf »

Greetings to this list
I have recently become interested in useing a buckler with my greatsword (SCA) and had someone mention that I may like to add a thrusting tip to the buckler..... what conciderations should I be making in the design and construction.
Oh yeah I live in the East Kingdom of the SCA

Hmmm, I was going to say that SCA rules for armoured combat make a punch buckler verbotten, but I think that I am mistaken. I went to the East Kingdom page and then the Society page. Couldn't find any reference to that being a no-no. Go to the www.sca.org site and click on the marshall's policies page and check out the rules to see if you can find it.
Edited-Ok I went to the rules of the list, section D. says you can't use a shield as weapon unless it is approved by the Kingdom Marshallate.

*read with a grain of salt*
I've not seen anything that specifically states that "punch bucklers" are illegal by SCA weapons standards, but you are forbidden from striking with your shield.

One workaround is simply to rename your "shield" a "weapon". If you make, say, a dagger with a 2" thrusting tip, then put a T-handle on it to make it more like a Katar, then add a handguard below the blade, then extend that handguard to, oh, 2 feet, then guess what? Your weapon works great as a 'buckler' without being a shield!

Put simply, when your rules are full of holes, there's always a way. Before you take that way, make sure it's safe, authentic and fun. Just expect a lot of hassles.

Another option might be is to have you buckler and then use a dagger in a downward grip in your buckler hand. The 17th-18th cent. Scots made good use of this with their targe in the Highland Charge as well as a few references of the technique in Talhoffer. It's using your off hand as an offensive weapon but still having the protection of the buckler. Just a thought.
