The Historic Combat Series at Pennsic XXXIII

***There has been a change in schedule from the Pennsic Handbook – the Plate and Mail Tourney will take place on Friday August 20th at 2 pm in the Red list***

In the interest of providing a venue for those who wish to focus on more authentic forms of combat in the SCA, we created the Historic Combat Series. First offered at Pennsic XXXI, the Historic Combat Series will be running for its third year at Pennsic XXXIII.

The focus of the Historic Combat Series is to attempt to capture the feel and flow of combat from particular times and places by using specific adaptations of the standard SCA rules (counted blows and different assumed armour standards for example). All authorized fighters are welcome to come and participate. The goal is to provide a competitive environment which fosters learning about pre 1600 combat.

***Excepting the Plate and Mail Tourney, there are no appearance requirements for participating in the various combats. We simply seek willing participants for our combat. All are welcome.***


Wednesday, August 11
noon - 2:00 pm Red List Pas du Dragon Noir
A 15th Century Passage of Arms in the style of Jaques de Lalaing's pas "The Passage of the Fountain of Tears." There is no appearance requirement for this combat

Thursday, August 12
noon - 2:00 pm Red List As Real Men Fought
Single combats using methods of victory described in period texts and held in either a round robin or single elimination format. There is no appearance requirement for this combat

Friday, August 13
noon - 2:00 pm Red List Combats with Longswords
Single combats with long sword (matched weapons provided) using rules derived from 14th and 15th century fighting manuals and held in either a round robin or single elimination format. There is no appearance requirement for this combat

Saturday, August 14
noon - 2:00 pm Red List Judicial Combats
Combats will be held in the style of a 15th century German judicial duel. Combatants will begin with spear, longsword and dagger. Combat will be held in either a round robin or single elimination format. There is no appearance requirement for this combat


Sunday, August 15
10:00 - 11:00 am Red List Pas du Dragon Noir
A 15th Century Passage of Arms in the style of Jaques de Lalaing's pas "The Passage of the Fountain of Tears." There is no appearance requirement for this combat

Monday, August 16
2:00 - 3:00 pm Red List Combats with Pollaxes
Single combats with pollaxe (matched weapons provided) using rules derived from 14th and 15th century fighting manuals and held in either a round robin or single elimination format. There is no appearance requirement for this combat

Tuesday, August 17
3:00 - 4:00 pm Red List As Real Men Fought
Single combats using methods of victory described in period texts and held in either a round robin or single elimination format. There is no appearance requirement for this combat

Wednesday, August 18
3:00 - 4:00 pm Red List Sword & Buckler Combats
Combats using sword and buckler held in either a round robin or single elimination format. Matched pairs of bucklers will be available. There is no appearance requirement for this combat

Thursday, August 19
4:00 - 5:00 pm Pas du Dragon Noir
A 15th Century Passage of Arms in the style of Jaques de Lalaing's pas "The Passage of the Fountain of Tears." There is no appearance requirement for this combat


Friday, August 20
2:00 - 4:00 pm Red List Plate and Mail
Combats held between predominantly steel clad combatants using counted blows in either a round robin or single elimination format. The number of blows will be based upon the armour a combatant is wearing.

Why no appearenec requirements for anything other than RPAM list?

All right! If I make it I will at least be doing the As Real Men Fought list.

The HCS is an introduction to more historic forms of SCA combat. I’m trying to sell a mind set rather then a specific time and place. I hope that those who fight in the HCS will aspire to participate in something as impressive as the Combat of the Thirty. The HCS also lets folks experiment with rules that evoke combat from different times and places, but not have to spend the extra on the kit. (I’d love to have someone offer to run earlier scenarios as well. I have a few ideas for next year already).

Groups outside the SCA set the standard for look of combat, I’m trying to get the “flowâ€Â

may I ask what the specific source material is for the rules of the Red List Poleaxe and Longsword matches?

My source materials are the translations of German material from the 14th and 15th century (thanks to all of those wonderful translators, such as Christian Tobler). I’m not knowledgeable enough in the Italian tradition to even steal ideas. I’ve borrowed interpretive ideas from Hugh Knight’s (Count Rhys) Die Schlachtschule http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/dieschlachtschule/ combat group of which I’m a member. I’ve also integrated some of my own ideas. All this of course has to be filtered through the SCA rules of combat. It’s an evolving process. The rules I intend to use are actually somewhat different from the ones I had my very long suffering web master post, in my on going struggle between realism of the recreation and simplicity. Participating in St Michael’s pas at Pennsic last year has given me some excellent ideas on how to remove some of the complexity of counting from the combatants.

I’ll try and post the rules a little later. I’m probably allow the longsword combatants to agree to whether they are recreating armoured or unarmoured combat on a bout by bout basis, although I think SCA combat lends itself more to recreating armoured combat.

Of course this means the couple of armour projects I put off are now going to have to go onto the front burner again.
