fighting spear

Post by crazedwombat »

I'm new this whole thing so if i sound ignorant, it's because i am. I was just wondering if you were to fight a spear, happened to get one on one or some such, and they attack, can you grab their spear pole and stab with your weapon?

Also, if you happen to be using a sheild and drop it, can you continue fighting without it?

Also, heh, can you go into battle with more than one weapon. For example, i want to go in with two short/medium swords, but i want a sheathed weapon on my back for backup incase i drop my weapons that is assuming i can drop a weapon and continue fighting.

I know most people start with stick and board but i'm going the hard route and going with two stick or a great big long stick or both. Actually i want to do ax and sword. anyways, these questions are new us newbies so quick answers work, thanks

If you are wearing gauntlets and your weapon has an appropriate thursting tip.. yes.

Also, if you happen to be using a sheild and drop it, can you continue fighting without it?

If you are wearing a gauntlet on that shield hand.. yes. If not, and you're in a tourney, you can usually get away with tucking your hand behind your back.

Also, heh, can you go into battle with more than one weapon.

Yes.

Welcome to the Archive!

I think you will find the answers to these and many other questions in the rules that are used for your combat. You did not specify but I will guess that you are in the SCA in the Kingdom of Atlantia. If I am correct then your rules are online at http://marshal.atlantia.sca.org/Rules/A ... ombat.html .

I suggest that you bookmark that page and return to it often. After you have read the rules if you still have questions about their application or interpretation I'm sure that one of the Atlantian marshals here will be able to advise you. You can also rely on your local marshal for advice. His name, addreess and e-mail are available at http://storvik.atlantia.sca.org/regnum.html .

1. Yes, you can grab the Haft of another person's weapon, BUT ONLY if you have full gauntlets on. Just make sure you don't grab the blade or thrusting tip. And realize that anyone fighting you with a spear won't close, they will stand at range and poke you.

2. Yes, only if you have a full gauntlet and elbow cop on your shield arm. If you drop the shield and only have a 1/2 gauntlet on that hand you must call hold and cover the hand before continuing that fight.

3. Yes, you can carry backup weapons with all systems. BUT, to be able to pull the backup weapon without a hold being called you must be wearing full gauntlets. More experienced fighters will carry a small "fishbat" a small sword about 30" long in a belt or scabard at their side when using spear or another 2 handed weapon. Not many will have a backup weapon when using 2 weapons at once or sword and shield. But it is possible.

NOTE: I assume you are going into SCA combat. In Calontir I know that you MUST get authorized in sword and shield BEFORE you can get authorized in other weapon system. Please make sure to check your kingdom's rules concerning authorization standards.

***D: Can you? Sure. Will you? No. You can grasp a weapon as long as you don't touch the "cutting edge" (I think this doesn't count for great swords: 1/2 swording - not sure). If you are in a spear dule and you try to grab instead of throwing shots, I forsee you getting gacked. Your hand is better served on the weapon. Moreover... Try throwing a spear shot using only one hand. Maybe you can do it well, I can't.

Also, if you happen to be using a sheild and drop it, can you continue fighting without it?

***D: That depends on what you have on the shield arm / hand, but the Marshall may call hold if your shield is creating an unsafe situation. Not recommended.

Also, heh, can you go into battle with more than one weapon.

***D: Yes.

For example, i want to go in with two short/medium swords, but i want a sheathed weapon on my back for backup incase i drop my weapons that is assuming i can drop a weapon and continue fighting.

***D: If you're fighting with gauntlets, sure! That sword on your back will be difficult to draw.

I know most people start with stick and board but i'm going the hard route and going with two stick or a great big long stick or both. Actually i want to do ax and sword. anyways, these questions are new us newbies so quick answers work, thanks.

***D: do what you like (or what you Kingdom allows - you mayn have to start S&S). If you do not learn S&S first, you do yourself a great disservice.

"Know yourself and know your enemy. Then a hundred battles fought and a hundred battles won."

If you don't know S&S, how can you know your enemy?
