For those of us who wish to talk about the many styles and facets of recreating Medieval armed combat.

It's quite interesting, these debates about armour requiements. Not an offense, but strangely, in the Ludus here in Hungary, we only use digitabulii* as armour while doing full speed fight with overweight steel swords, and so far... not even a finger broke. Of course, we DO have dislocated elbows/shoulders, and biiig bruises, especially when some instructors fight with naked chests. But no broken bones or lost eyes...
*Digitabulum: floating riveted steel mittens without either cuff or wrist plate, used by roman gladiators.

Sounds to me like what we need is a limit on how many rules we have. If they had to delete an old rule in order to install a new one, the rules would get concise real fast.

In all reality, they will never be happy with the rules and will always try to make more. Just seems to be human nature. I'm all for Darwinism here. There is something to be said for letting a man be responsible for his own safety.

Maybe change the waivers to say " I recognize that I am a dumb-ass who is about to get into a bat fight. I recognize that getting hit with a bat is inherently unsafe. The SCA Inc. isn't my mommy and doesn't have to take care of me like a 3 year-old."

Whaddaya think, does that sound good?

Ahriman, you don't fight like we do... in our game, a full-powered strike to the head (for example) is not an accident, it's expected.

We put dents in 2mm helmets.. some armor requirements are kind of essential :).

I've tried some steel fighting the Jomsvkings do, it's fun, fast, and waaaay lighter than what we practice.

Do you know Russ Mitchell? He used to play in Hungary, and he's seen some of the SCA stuff. He could probably give you a better comparison.
Hark the moaning gulls around him,
Hark their shuddering calls of terror
At his fearful fighting pæan.

Oh wait, no, those are stupid rules too.

Heh, you said it all. Has anyone been injured? Not "Ouch" but "Now I need medical care."?????

Hell, I broke my hand using both a basket hilt, finger gaunts while fighting sword and board..

How did it happen?
Well, I was fighting Morgan the Wed. before Gulf Wars (*mutter*), I went to throw a flat snap to the head, he threw the same shot, his shot hit my basket hilt, and snappo, broken hand.
Wasn't because of a lack of armor, in fact, I might venture that it was too much armor that prevented my hand from rotating with the force instead of being locked into a bad angle causing the torsion fracture.

Maybe we should require that we all fight with boffer weapons..

Crystoll, who went to the doc for a cast AFTER Gulf Wars..
