visored helm copnstruction for padded weapons

Post by Wyrm »

I'm after some suggestions for making or getting hold of suitable equiptment for protecting the head while fighting with padded weaponry (the head will be a target). It need not reflect anything medieval or meet any requirements other than protecting the head. I regret selling a couple of fencing helms I had but have since thought a clear perplex visor would be the best option over grills or fencing masks (perhaps similar to the ones the RSW guys use). These helms are for others to wear, I am also looking at adapting my own 16 guage helm by fitting a clear perplex visor over the eyes for the added protection. Has anyone done anything like this before?

Anyway, suggestions welcome.

How heavy will the weaponry be? Is this for any sort of medievalish/fantasyish game?

If it is for padded weapons, you won't need anything as strong as SCA reg helms. The imported Indian stuff you can find on Ebay should do the trick.

(on Pennsic) I know that movie. It is the 13th warrior. A bunch of guys in armour that doesn't match itself or anybody elses, go on a trip and argue and get drunk and get laid and then fight Tuchux.

Nothing as heavy as SCA at all. A piece of perspex clear plastic (dont know why I spelt it perplex higher up) should be of sufficient strength. I am going to make up some strong padded weaponry so the only concern I have is such a weapon whipping across someones eye or something else in the face, still could cause some nasty damage and prevention is the best cure. Its not for any particular game I just like to be able to swing hard like the SCA without causing too much damage and having to spend, both myself and my fighting parter/s, a $hit load of money to get lots of safety armour going. So I just want something to completely cover the eyes, I think I'll pop into the safey store today and have a look around.

Its great fun being whacked in the head by one of these things, you really got to experience it to appreciate it :)
