Greetings from Bryce de Byram, Knight Errant and Bachelor!

Since fate has decried that I may not travel south to Gleann Abhann to do battle for my King and advance the cause of chivalry, I offer this Challenge to those worthy Men at Arms that will strive on that Holy ground.

I say to you that you should seek out whatever villains that would shoot at knights and good gentles of coat-armour with arrows, slings or other such base weapons, in the Ravine and Castle Battles, and with great joy, I bid you to smite* them for me!

For each man that seeks out and slays at least two archers in these battles and reports this deed to me, I will offer a small gift in token of my esteem either at Blackstone Raids or at the great Pennsic War.

This I swear, as I am a knight in service to the fairest lady known to man, Melisent.

Now lets get this story straight. I am confused.

Its simple. Bryce is paying people to kill archers.(hiring mercenaries to work on spec) Archers are permitted to participate in this buisness transaction if they only kill other archers. In addition, Animal wants to kill Bryce with an arrow, and Bryce will try to shoot him first to prevent this.

I hope you intend this to mean "on the opposing side". If you pay off for kills on their own side, I'll pony up for a bounty of my own...

My Barony of Hawkwood is preparing to field a squad of crossbowmen at Gulf Wars. I am sure that Sir Bryce's pledge would not inspire Atlantia's opponents to wound our crossbowmen, but I'm not so sure about Sir Vitus's influence... Hence, I have warned our men, and they will be prepared.

So, my kingdom is going through a complete reauthorization process. I'm one of the authorizing marshals. We have an archer who NEVER fights heavy other than CA. I belive he's swung a sword ONCE at an event since his authroization. He's got some knee problems and he simply can't do it. So... I could make him reauthorize fighting heavy...and he really shoulnd't do it... so he could never fire a bow again... that's the PERMANENT removal of an archer from the field. Does that count? LOL

(In case anyone is all twisted up, he WOULD do it if he had to, but it would hurt. I wouldn't do it to him, because it's really unnecessary. We're only pushing people thru re-auth fights if they've been inactive for a period of time and he has not. He's a close acquantice, he's a good guy, I'm not a jerk, it's just a joke...relax.)

When I get done laughing my ass off, I will think about how I really feel about hiring mercs, fighters and archers to take out enemy archers in an SCA combat context. Too damn funny.

It reminds me of when one of my squire brothers went around crying "Bring me the head of Richard Blackmoore!".

Having a price on your head and people out to get you for money, beer or tokens of gratitude brings up all sorts of interesting thoughts, not all of them pleasant, but most of them amusing.

Maybe this is a useful purpose for the Tuchux at Pennsic. Hire them to kill off the archers. "Hey guys, lets go kill some knights from a distance!" "NOOOOO! If you do that, the Tuchux will get us! Don't even talk about it. Oh, no! Here come some Tuchux now! Someone offered them bounteous babes, beer and bunny fur to kill us off. We are doomed. AIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!".

Oh, sir, I've thought about it, given it some good long thought. If I were in a position where I were forming a lance, and I saw some folks interested in CA, I'd throw a kettle hat and a jupon on them, with some arbalester armor, and a couple of arbalests from Bart Hightower, and take them in as an anti-archer force, for certain.

I still kinda want too

If I could think of a good bounty.. or "token of appreciation".. I would offer one to those archers who take the field and save the life of one of their fellow fighters.. or pehaps raise the level.. and give something to those who help keep their royalty or allied royalty "safe" from the opposing fighters.

"save" means killing that spearman who's just gakked several of your fighters and who is now targeting your fellow fighters.. or killing that fighter who has flanked your unit and is about to kill one of your teammates.. especially if he's doing it from behind.

Sir Bryce, thanks very much for the idea. I believe you just help me decide what I would like to do to encourage more combat archers at pennsic. I would love to have a full company of archers at my side and now I have a good idea (IMO) of something that I can do to show them my appreciation.

I agree.. killing the archers on your side is a very bad thing to do.

Even worse if one of those archers are your Queen or Princess.

Killing your own sides' archers or crossbowmen is, in fact, historically accurate........ the French did it at Crecy, and look how well THEIR battle turned out...


What if someone puts out a bounty for all archers to single you out at your next war?

My good brother Sir Bryce de Byram, verily I submit to you a challenge in return for your offer upon the heads of all good archers doing theire duty for king and country. I herby hold you accountable for those who would strike an Archer after they have yielded and would consider it justice upon you good sir that you take up bow for a year and aday. forgoing all weapons save such mentioned, if those you have thusly inspired with your bounty should act outside the bounds of chivalric behavoir and stike a yielded man. Thusly if any man acts without noble cause and abuses an acher in such a sad way you would from the day of reporting hold yourself to bow and arrow for a year and a day, IF bychance you are driven to fulfill such an act I will then and FOREVER put down my bow and anon never use it again upon the combat field. in remembrance for your fulfillment of oath.



As you have thusly put forth your challenge it seems most fitting you accept mine.


As we are good Knights and are sworn to eternal service we should both find those suitable and willing to take up whatever arms God shall allow and promote theyre use upon the field against our kingdoms enemy. as such it is right and proper for the archers of your kingdom to be in the emply of you and all good knights.

Since forcing an archer to yield is a 'death' for them that's all I'm talking about.

I have like, three million things I could say, but all of them would make me sound like a dick! I have a couple of friends in your kingdom and wouldn't slander it because of them...

Let me just say that House Cerebus has been a great inspiration to me, espically last year in the Ravine battle. Sir Ereika's house in fact, was the direct inspiration.

While my blazon is in the corner of ever message I type here, and I shrink from no man, I assure you that the Cerebus archers have NO PROBLEM find me or any knight on the field of battle.

I will not be at Gulf Wars as I stated above. Thus I offer the small token. And if you think you are getting paid anything substanical, then you will be sorely disappointed!

Chase down archers (if you can get around the pavises!) and make them yield!

As a good friend and Count said recently as he leviated, as he is want to do, and struck a Combat Archer in an authorization (part of our process for those of you that want to freak at ever little thing) "NO BLOW UNANSWERED!!"

B I would love to but just this morning I got the next installment in my cast done. Good news is I'm healing and the wound is shrinking, but the bad news is I have another 4 weeks in this cast up to my knee. After that I have the time it takes for the skin to re-toughen, then I get fitted for a special shoe with an insert, a t-strap and an ankle brace. Then I get to think about fighting again. They're still in the process of cutting out the dead stuff. A little more each week. But the cool thing is that the doctor seems to think that I'll have most of my mobility back with this brace he's gonna make me. I cant wait. Walking or fighting on this has been like walking on jacks. So maybe after this all heals I'll be able to fight a little closer to my level of ability. I hope so. I suck right now

Samuel strives to be a Knight of the People. Question- what are the traps that come from trying to be such a knight? If a Knight is elevated, he is no longer of "the people."
Can an SCA knight *be* what a knight was, and still retain honor? Honor in the medieval sense? How can one seek after the esteem of the people and the Order, while not betraying either?

One hazard of being a knight of the people ( who can talk to the young) is that stuffed shirt pompous knights may show you less respect.

One of the disadvantages of being a Knight of any sort is the height of the pedestals that folks want to stick you up on, not so much because they want you to be something to idolize, so much as to revel in the length of your fall when they cast you down.

It's extremely hard to live with any consistency at all in the SCA. You are bent and broken over so many different groups desires that it's easier just to be a good old boy. You can never say a word that upsets someone and fit right in.

Or you can be true to yourself and piss off the world. From my limited experience, both Sir Samuel and Sir Vitus fall into the second category.

It's easy to cast stones. It's much harder to try and actually _listen_ to things that you don’t want to hear.
