Howdy Everyone,

Time for the trip into fantasy and humor.

Start with "If I was the SEM..." and finish the sentence.

For me:

"If I was the SEM, I would hand out the following guidelines:

1. Have fun.
2. Play safe.
3. Wow the crowd.
4. Authenticy appearance and function (if safe)."

I think I would be drawn and quartered, but some of the less authentcity minded SCAers wouldn't know how to do it...so it would be a nice get-together for LH and the SCA.

PS: Both the silly and serious replies are requested. I'm a nothing in the SCA, and this thread has absolutely no bearing on absolutely anything but possibly your smile.

If I was the SEM I would lurk on boards such as these and then destroy those who opposed my dominance by only creating rules with their names in it. Such as:

If your SCA name is Sarnac, you must fight blind folded and then only with a dog collar zapper that I control.

I would switch out the dog collar zapper with "if Sarnac wins, he has to watch the "Best of Barney" with 3 year olds." The dog collar will only encourage him.

If you can't get up right away, be dead. Waiting 5 min (playing dead) to rise and fight again ain't chivalrous.

oh, and remember its a game.

A good blow is ...
(a) one hit anywhere against no armor or plastic
(b) two hits anywhere against chain or scale
(c) three hits anywhere against plate
Hits against a helm with sword or spear are not counted.
Hits against a helm with a mass weapon or poll arm count as plate.
Hits against a closed face count as plate.
Hits against a bar grill count as no armor.

That was easy.

Dude.... we tried that when I was down for your Crown...... you promised that night would never be spoken of....!!!

If I was SEM I'd rip off Aaron's ideas. Personally, I'd say if you're a fighter, try your best for authenticity. For knights, I'd say nobody gets knighted with showing plastic, rabidly fantasy armor, or anything which is unbecoming of someone on par with a Laurel.

I'd also make three rulesets for recieving blows. The current one, armor as worn, and counted blows. I assume armor as worn would be fairly rare, as it'd go on forever (at least with complete 15th century or later harnesses).

I think Raito's rules for his Japanese tourney (which influenced the Battle of 30 rules, it looks like. Who did those?) should also be looked at for future official use.

I see no problem with any transitional or later harness with three provisos:
The neck
The fingers
The spine

Granted, that covers current standards currently, but I'd make it official.

I'd also make all proposed changes public as of the moment of proposal. I'd also ask people what they thought in person, but the current SEM may do this, I've never met him.

I know this is all hypothetical, but is there really any authority that an SEM has over who gets knighted? I was under the impression that it was between the Knights of (insert kingdom) and the King (Knights vote and King knights the person). Where does the SEM fit in?

I would piss off 1/2 the KW for doing too much & the other 1/2 for not doing enough. Pretty much like every SEM before me.

my replicator would measure you and for small fee outfit you in authetic armour.
All armour will be fully touch senstive and once the standard psi blow is passed three times the armour would lock up.
If the standard psi blow times 2.5+ is thrown by a person their armour would lock.
The royals would have a button to lock up any armour on the field.
My Salary would be one hundred million dollars.

The SEM only has the influence of any other member of the chiv in terms of who gets knighted.

The knights don't "vote" per se in most kingdoms...they advise. Their advise may take the form of a polling, but it's not (usually) a "vote" per se. IE, if it's 50 against and 1 for, and the 1 for puts "King" in front of his name, you may see a new knight.

at least in singles it should be whatever the two parties agree on (counted blows, grapple/strike, etc). but remember, if you don't play nice, none of the other kids will play with you....

1. I would encourage Armor as worn fights.... See the rules of the Battle of the 30.

2. I would make hands legal target areas, like the cup is..... Legal, but socially not a good idea to target them.

3. I would ban exposed plastic with a years notice given to everyone to get the kit in order. I would use the Atlantian model for starters. The only exception would be for weapons, but would encourage leather covers for the mass weapons. (yep, ya better cover the shield edge in leather/rawhide etc.)

4. I would not allow unpadded polearms.

5. I would ban the word "Madu", but not the weapon itself..... it would have to fall into one of the other catagories.

6. I would make a telling blow to the leg end the fight. (no fighting from the ground unless you put yourself there before you are hit)

Those are a few ideas.....
