The Armour Archive

I thought I'd share a few pics of my finished kit, as I'm rather proud of it.
It's loosely based on a 6th century Romano-Brit kit, used to fight SCA heavy combat, so certain liberties were taken at the sacrifice of authenticity.

My thanks to Windrose Armoury for the helm, Adam for the lamellar plates/shoulder cops, Massa G for the gorget (which I accessorized myself), Sasuke for the leg greaves (that, which along with my sword with crosshilt and pommel set from Roderick, along with a leather scabbard I made, which will be shown in an upcoming pic), someone off of Ebay whom I totally forget for the chainmaille and, finally, myself for the bazubands, leatherwork on the lamellar and the semi-belteus.

Also, thanks to Egfroth, Sebastian, Matthew and any others I riddled with questions about my kit. Enjoy.

Having fought with 3/4 sleeves and bauzubands, I will tell you that you will want to trim the hauberk sleeves. The 3/4 sleeves will slip inside the bauz's while fighting and you haven't experienced pain until you take a shot to the elbow with mail sleeves inside the cop. The energy transfers very nicely and leaves very interesting bruises right on your elbow.

The kit is beautiful, btw! You did very good work on the Bauzubands. That looks like Massa G's old bauzuband patern, very well done on the shaping. I also like the metal embelishments on the elbows.

All in all, very nice!

Very nice kit indeed. Same era as my kit and very similar as well except I do not have maile. I would like to see those greaves as well if possible. I have yet to find a pair that I am happy with and I know I do not have the skill to make metal greaves. Well done.

Very spiffy.

Your helmet shows how far armor-making has progressed. It has been relatively recent that I have seen helmets that are more "form fitting." That is to say the bottom is narrower than the brow band. It used to be that the only time you saw that was in an armet or some of the bascinets.

I don't know much about that era of armour, but I really like the little leather scales that are suspended from the shoulder cops. For some reason they just look cool. Is that a typical feature of that type of armour? Are they rivetted to the cop or sewn or something else?

Nope, just a butted shirt I bought off of Ebay. I haven't fought in it yet, but I was hoping with the chest protection I'd have less blow-outs.

Sorry Thorstenn and Odo, as mentioned prior, in the middle of a move (and the end of a three year relationship to boot) so time has been a bit strained. Odo, it has a brass nasal and all the rivetting is brass but the helm itself is stainless.

Actually, Dan, Chris from the Leather Factory and I worked up the design. I'm working on the 2.0 version as we speak, as I don't like all the excess elbow leather. I used the well-known lion door-knocker for the elbows and the gorget. I thought it spiffed it up a bit, thanks.

Heya Bedlam. That I did not. Where I used to live didn't provide for a good working area but my new place may be a bit bigger, so I'm hoping I can tackle it this winter. We'll see. Thanks for the pics.

Actually, the leather scale idea struck me when I saw a picture that D Sebastion sent me on Byzantine armour. It seemed a good way to offer some period-looking padding. They are rivetted to the cop and then sewn together so that they don't rotate around the rivet. I used the same idea for the waist area of the lamellar, with 6-8 ounce veg-tan leather. Comfortable as all hell.

Like I said, I'll do my best to get pics of the greaves (along with the scabbard and the hilt/pommeled sword set and possibly my oval shield) up by the end of the week.
