Hey! I got one of those! But it's obviously shorter (22" long). I call it by the french term "bec de corbin" (crows beak). I also call it a Surrey ear pick (but not sure where I picked up the term). Perhaps some notables from Surrey had a penchant for trying to get at people's ear wax with them at some point.
I know I've read that the English were fond of hammers with long spikes on the back. Mine is still unfinished. The head and spike is a single piece of solid rubber I cut down and shaped with a rasp. The hammer side is actually just for looks, as the business end is the beak. The rattan has a sleeve of rubber on it (from the remains of a blown bicycle tube). Nice grip.
It's got 1" thick piece of foam on the 2" x 2" flanged hammer head and a 3/4" thick disk of foam on the 4" long x 1.5" diameter beak. I haven't done anything with it because the marshals tend to bounce my mass weapons or atleast tell me I should have more then the required amount of foam on them.

They really hate blade heavy stuff.
This one weighs less then my kong mace (which has no foam at all on it), at 1.6 lbs. and I know the marshals would have a caniption if I whipped it out at practice. I can see them now "No! You have to wrap the whole head in a down pillow, covered with marshmellow whip and then bubble wrap it and bring it back to next practice and then maybe you can use it."
Not really, but many a truth is said in jest.

Hi!
following the inspiration and instructions of Eldric von Atzinger - to whom I would like to express my deepest gratitude - I've played a bit in the workshop to create the weaponry for the Pas d'Armes my Knight held this weekend.
The pollaxes got a beating, but the swords stayed strong.
Cheers,
William

Meinhard,
these are my standard "cheap" grips: After shaping and hardware attachment I cover the rattan in PVA (wood) glue. Then the grip is wrapped in cheap packaging rope (2-3mm thick) and another coat of PVA glue brushed on. Once the glue is dry, I paint the grip with acrylic paints (these were done in dark red with a black wash), let the paint dry and apply a final coat of acrylic clear varnish (satin). Way leass work than well-fitted leather grips, good grip and they hold up decently against chewing gauntlet bits.
Cheers,
William

William, excellent work!
I have a stick of (accoording to my sources)
HUGE rattan waiting for me, purchased from Baron Eirik. Heard tell it is in the 3½" range. I might be able to get the pommel and guard carved out of it
Going to do this sword 'Eddy style" also, along with a couple seaxs.

my new poleaxe and dagger. The poleaxe might be a tad long, but figured can cut it down if needs be...hard to grow it longer.
Wus uncertain as to whether to try and add a spike/thrusty to the opposite side of the axe. Plenty of historical pictures of such, so not to worried there, just not sure for some reason

Nice. Definitely put a back spike on it. Hell, I think just a little red tape there should cover it.

Put the spike on.
Got a question, was wondering whether I should do a bit of strapping tape and duct tape a bit down the shaft to help protect it a bit against the inevitable blocking and hitting the edge of shields. Say 1 - 1 1/2 feet down the shaft from the head

I don't think it is necessary but you could put some duct tape there to simulate langets or a socket. It adds a nice look.
How long is the poll axe?

At least for now it is about 6 feet long. I stand 6'6". Was aiming for 5'6" - 5'8".....and promptly forgot small things like the extra length for the spikes.

Leather cord wrapped handles, shiny Duck Tape, and metal hardware. Also I finally started using a knife to whittle down the rattan as opposed to power sanding/angle grinders. It works so much better. I'm currently putting together a falcata (because i had nothing else to do w/ this curved piece of rattan), and could use some advice:
Does anyone know where to get gold duck tape? Do they even make it?

Ronan220 wrote:My First Attempt Making a Great Sword and matching Secondary.
The Pommel and Hilts on these two are one piece attached via welded flat steel bars along both sides and the rattan gets cut down then wedged into the slot. Really makes for a solid feel and look imo.
The Secondary hits like a thug stick too as it has 100% PERFECT balance, the Great Sword I need to move the 2nd set of Quillions up about 6-8inches higher to fix the balance.

Hey Congrats on your squiring to Duke Martin. Great seeing you this weekend.

Couldn't find gold duct tape, even on the internet, so i went with brown. It turned out lighter than I expected. Also, I have no use for it, so if there's anyone with a greek/celtic personna that wants it, it's for sale.

Some very nice weapons shown on this thread. Some of them look very realistic and that rocks.
I guess these are my best sca weapons as these are the only ones I have made thus far. Knocked the basket hilt and them up this week. Need to attach the thrusting tips.
Next on the list is a cross hilted sword and a poll hammer.

My reworked Katzbalger... I tried to get my hands on a piece of rattan big enough to make it shaped, but alas... I was unable too. This is a Stefan hilt and pommel. Just a little time with my dremmel polishing kit and it was shining and happy. A brass washer and screw to secure the pommel seemed to work out quite nice.
Next... to make a scabbard for it. Been reviewing woodcuts on how they were hanged, but if anyone has a diffinitive source on that I would LOVE to get a finger in the right direction.
