This is my first attempt to pretty-up a plastic basket hilt. I got it for next to nothing a couple weekends ago. I figure if I'm going to own one of these ridiculous things, it may as well try to pass the 20 foot rule.

[It may be worth noting that this fooled an inattentive Josh Warren, until I showed him the zoomed in image.]

So, how'd I do?

Thank you. I saw this:
http://www.darkwoodarmory.com/index.php ... ucts_id=29 and thought, "Gorgeous, but I'm not made of money." Then I found this utterly unremarkable plastic basket hilt sword at a lost and found turned garage sale tent at Crown and figured why not....

Nice... now is the head of the spear made from leather or is it just made for stabbing at people so all foam?

Tip is foam.

Masterful. I think you are going to fool some marshals.

Not near as well done as some of the previous folks but it's an idea I'm working on.
I still need to stain the rattan on this one.

The head is a 3 inch thrusting tip from Baron Eirik, I cut 4 v notch grooves in it on opposing sides. Then took a section of thick rattan (again from Eirik) and quartered it into pie wedges. Made a hole through the thruster and put the rattan through most of the way. I left a little bit of space at the end of the rattan and the 3 inch tip so I could put a low profile thrusting tip in. As I said I still need to stain the rattan handle and add a lanyard, I'm hoping this thing performs well enough to be my standard back up weapon.
Oh, and it's a windrose pommel.

Yeah, just a double ended short spear (probably T&T). It's even rattan. I don't see any reason it wouldn't be legal.

It looks to have 2 slashing ends, which, is illegal.

True, but the edge tape runs on all four sides. I wouldn't take a cut from that thing. Even as fantasy weapons go, it's silly. The best you could hope to achieve with a 4-edged blade is a draw cut or stab. As far as I know, draw cuts aren't legal blows in the SCA.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

Which is why I proposed thrust and throw javelin. I assume he made the ends look more like spear type heads, then the usual ugly thrusting tips.

Yeah its just a Spear thrusty at either end. For fighting Short Spear with, not cutting with it.

So my first attempt at an Ottoman styled sword, there are a few things I will do different next time. Possibly work on getting the cross guard anodized to match the pommel.

Still needs some contrasting tape but I'll have to get that tomorrow before practice.

I like the new stuff, Ben. That sword is impressive. Now all we need to do is get you some wood stain... and yes, match up the furniture. Windrose on the crossguard? Do they make that in Brass?

I have some stain, just haven't applied it yet.
And no unfortunately Windrose doesn't do the cross guard in brass, but I'm working on a few idea's for the next one. If you're lucky I'll smack you around with it at Lilies....muahahahahah

Bring it on. My shiny new armory and I shall see you there. (Possibly also at shire practice, but that's just a maybe at this point. I have to get in a bout with with Mongrel, too.)
Perhaps a brass/gilt metallic paint on the guard?

Ben, that saber looks great. Jolly well done. If you could actually use gold tape (considering it's visible enough) for the cutting edge it would have quite an allure, methinks!
