I'm a lefty, and personally, I just love the looks I see on faces when at first they do not realize I am one. First confusion, as to how in the hell they are getting hit in those spots, and then the

when they realize it. Sometimes cranky, sometimes sheepish, sometimes, ok, now I've got your number.
I fought with a very personable knight (whose name I have unfortunately forgotten) in a pick up at Pennsic this summer that pointed out my sword was in the wrong hand at the beginning of our fight. I agreed, stating that the damned thing just kept ending up there.

here ya go felix:
Demographics
Approximately 8 to 15% of the adult population is left-handed.[1] Studies indicate that left-handedness is more common in males than females,[2] and more in homosexuals than in heterosexuals.[3] Left-handedness, in comparison to the general population, also appears to occur more frequently in identical twins,[4] and several groups of neurologically disordered individuals (epilepsy,[5] Down's Syndrome,[6] autism,[7] mental retardation,[8], dyslexia, etc.) Statistically, the identical twin of a left-handed person has a 76% chance of being left-handed, identifying the cause(s) as partly genetic and partly environmental.[9]

are they really that rare in the sca? as i think i have seen quite a normal number of lefties...
We have them all over the place here in my local area. They still are less that 20% of the fighters. So rare, (shrug) just not as likely as a righty. Wonder what the ratio of lefty versus righty in males in the World is the reason I say males is that is the majority of the fighting community.

Shield? What shield? He's a Kilkenny squire
Has to learn to pull that right side back against the lefties, unless he's going to put it right in there where it stuffs everything up and they can't throw a blow.

Hold it - he's losing to lefties using a shieldless form?

I can, but I am originally left handed....fought right handed due to injury for about 10 years. The injury healed, I then injured the right shoulder and have since switched back to my left hand...some times I feel a might bit confused.....

I love it too. To me, it looks like two reasonably talented righties fighting--while they are both drunk.

Oddly enough - I was the only right handed fighter in my shire when I started out. For years I couldn't figure out why all the left handed fighters I met traveling thought they had some sort of psych going

That almost looks like scientific information to make some kind of statement about left handed people.

Thanks for the info your grace. Now that I am no longer busy after this weekend when you going to be in the Midrealm again, would love to fight a bit.

Lefties are not too rare in my universe. Four of the people I regularly train with are lefties. Including my Knight. I am the exception as a freakish-righty.

Cait, you are wrong. There is one other Righty in your "STUDY" group, the little guy, Belsac. Have you been hit with a "Flame Tip" recently or is that just my patented move?
In answer to the question "Are lefties rare?" well no more rare than anywhere else. Though there was a study done that found more left handed people survived in "Combative Cultures" i.e. those using hand weapons. Do not remember where or why, but I found it cool.
I love fighting left handed opponents. I can use the stuff taught to right handers for use against right handers, just opposite.

I heard an amusing story about Duke Reinmar of Artemisia, and his son, Dietmar. Both are left-handed. As I heard it, Dietmar started practicing while he was too young to legally fight in tourneys or practices, so his training was almost exclusively against his father, in their back yard - his left-handed father.
When he could legally fight, Dietmar had a much more difficult time fighting right-handers than he did fighting left-handers.
From what I hear lately, he's adjusted well.

That is exactly why I ocassionally train right-handed with my left-handed daughter .

I loved fighting lefties (I'm a lefty) when I fought. I looked forward to those fights, because they felt more balanced to me -- the same amount of defense and offensive opportunities. When I fought opposite-handed people, I had the sense that I had to work harder at defense and couldn't enjoy the offense enough. I actually ended up becoming decently defensive, but still sucked at offense by the time I stopped fighting. I had right-hand envy. All those right-handers were always getting to fight same-handed fighters, and I imagined it was more fun.
